  • No, I won't lie to your wife, sir.

It's nearing the end of my shift at New Hotel when I get a phone call.

    The players:
    Me: Teh Evi-al Queen-age.
    SC: Sucky Caller
    SS: My co-hort in crime.

Me: Good evening! <Hotel>, This is EQ, how can I help you?
SC: Yeah, this is <name> I stayed with you guys over the weekend.
Me: Yes sir, I remember. How can I help you?
SC: I'm currently staying in <other city in next state over>, if I give me wife the number for your hotel, can you tell her that I stepped out with friends when she calls?
    Me: Sir?
SC: I'm not supposed to be gambling, see.
Me: Sir, I really don't feel comfortable lying to your wife.
SC: Why not? I'm not supposed to be here.
Me: (then maybe you should... leave?) I'm sorry sir, I will not lie to your wife.
SC; But I stay there all the time. Okay, fine.

I might. But the bribe would have to start at four figures.

    In cash.

Before he started doing whatever . . .

And then again, I *might* tell his wife the truth anyway. What's he gonna do, tell on me?

This one reminded me of something from years ago.

I used to work for a secretarial temp agency years ago. I had one job subbing for the office manager of a small construction company - definition of office manager being the one person who didn't do construction but stayed at the office and did everything else, LOL.

Late in the week I had to prepare the pay checks from a list I was given. Typing them out, I found two checks for the same individual - one approximately what most of the other checks were for, the other one much smaller. Went to the boss to find out what was up, and was told,

"Oh, that's *Joe-Bob", he got a raise a while back, and didnt want his wife to know about the extra money, so we give him his raise in a seperate check".

Good thing I was only a temp and not there longer, I don't think I'd been able to resist having lunch with his wife some day and congratulating her DH on the raise......

Sorry if this was a threadjack, been lurking for ages and finally decided to tip toe into the forum

      Madness takes it's toll....

Yes, Sir. I would be happy to accomodate this request. We just require nonrefundable $50 up front for each time we tell your wife asks where you are.
To right the countless wrongs of our days... We shine this light of true redemption, that this place may become as paradise...Oh, what a wonderful world such would be...

I'd wonder how you're supposed to know he's really gambling, and not trying to knock off someone -- or maybe knock up someone!

Or better yet.... Tell him "yes" and then tell the wife the truth when she calls

It's not like he'll have proof of his claims with you... and he'll be too busy being yelled at by his wife to complain to you.

Or if he does complain... lie again and tell him that the worker who agreed to his request was fired.

Well, to be fair, he might have a good reason for this. Our payroll guy's wife has a tendency to take whatever is in their joint account and blow it on lottery tickets. So he puts only a set amount away each time. Or maybe Joe Bob wanted to surprise her with a nice present without her knowing how much it was. I'm just saying, in this situation, you need to give someone the benefit of the doubt. Also, it would technically be illegal to share information about his payscale with anyone that is not him, HR, or management. You get a guy in trouble like that and he may take you down with him. Just saying.

              /End of threadjack. Again.

Oh, I was always too professional to actually DO anything like that, but doesn't mean I can't have fun thinking of it, especially as I got the distinct impression that the extra check was for more "drinking with the boys" money.

It's his money, I'd have no problem with him putting away his raise for 'drinking' money, if they were doing fine on his paycheck before it's not like she's going to miss it.

And I'm sure the moment his wife stops complaining, he'd call your manager and tattle. Then, your manager would reprimand you (as "the customer is ALWAYS right") and probably either dock the $ he gave you (if he did) for lying and/or fire you. I don't trust these type of SCs, they always have their way of getting back at you. If you don't comply with his request for lying, you get in trouble for not helping him...if you do, you get in trouble for lying as mentioned above!

I remember this one incident when a guest called down and wanted me to check him out. (This was around 7:00 AM, at the beginning of my shift.) Most people who do this come down 5-10 minutes later and want their paper work ready to sign.

Anyway, it got very busy (I was in the process of checking someone out when he called) and got phone call after phone call that morning (mainly people making reservations).

Well it was close to 10:00 AM and the guest that wanted me to check them aout at 7:00 came down. By that time, it slowed down and I could actually breathe for a moment. But in the frenzy, I forgot to check him out. HE WAS FURIOUS!!!!!
(Like I stated before, most people who do this check out 5-10 minutes later.)

He said he would never stay here again. And yelled other stuff I didn't understand.

I found out later from another clerk that this guy does this because he drives a delivery truck and he is suppose to be on the road by 7:00 or so. He needed a time stamped check-out receipt to prove that he left at 7:00. I rarely work mornings so I didn't know. But still, he was making us lie for his company. Not right.
