  • Wherein a SC cannot do complex math

Kind of a short story, but it's repeated enough that I die a little each time it happens. Tonight it happened again

SC: How much is it for a week?
Me: The regular rate is $89.99 per night, but if you're staying for at least a week, I can drop your rate down to $79.99 per night.
SC: How much is that for the whole week?

I know I wouldn't be able to do quick math fast enough to know that it would be 559.93 pre tax. Had to use a calculator for that one even.

Might as well just do what I do and tell the guest that it would be "$575.11 with taxes, or $69.99 a night without."**

**This was the rate we used at my old <broken> hotel. New Hotel doesn't even have a weekly rate.

No, but $79.99 is one penny off of $80 even. 80x7 is much easier to figure out without a calculator.

Yeah, I thought that was easy math. But that's me. Or maybe the sc was trying to finagle a cheaper rate. Even though you did give a cheaper rate.

And since the savings is exactly ten dollars a night it is easy to see that you save $70 if you stay a week.

I have to admit I'd probably ask the same question - my brain freezes up if I have to do maths and this would take me a couple of minutes to work out, easier to ask!

I wouldn't be able to do that math at ALL.
Me and numbers are not friends. 80x7 means nothing to me. It's really sad how I can't do math on my own.

Then can I borrow 80x7 dollars please?

Having worked retail, I can do percentages off in my head. Very handy.

Except that the other night my MIL dragged me along to the local Mervyn's (for those not in the area, Mervyn's is shutting down, so they're selling everything, including fixtures), where she found out I had this ability. I spent the next two hours figuring prices for her in my head, which was a pain as they were doing 60% off, then an additional 20% off on a lot of items.

I can also count money very quickly. I joke that it's because my mother worked in a bank branch when she was pregnant with me.

I'm a complete math moron and I could do that one in my head! Just multiply 8 and 7 and stick a 0 on the end!

This is also why I carry a calculator everywhere.

80x7, 8x7, add a penny, take a penny, it's all the same, I got nothing.

I dunno, man, I just cannot be judgemental to someone who can't do even "simple" math. That could be me. In fact, that IS me.

Have you ever been known to add 2+2 and get 5....with a calculator? That's the kind of math moron I am.

The only math I really can do is if I'm increasing or decreasing a recipe. Don't know why, but that I can do in my sleep!

Although, it has gotten better. After 4 years of counting down drawers at the Green&White place, I started to see patterns. So, still not doing math so much as pattern analysis.

Call me crazy, but I've got a theory that the gene that's for math and the gene for wrapping presents are somehow linked. Every person that I know, including me and my mother, that sucks at math also cannot wrap worth a damn.
