  • My arms do not stretch great lengths, and I'm not an octopus

Just a general thing that gets on my nerves. We don't have a moving belt on our counters. People feel the need to place items on the very edge, furthest away from me, and just watch as I reach to get it.
I can understand things being at the far end of the counter if they had a large order and that stuff was put up last. Usually I'll take some time to bag things, and most people move it up closer, but sometimes they don't.

Also, when people get a small order, just a few items, and I tell them the total, they hold the money out waiting for me to take it, as I'm bagging their things. Ok, I appreciate that you're all ready to pay, but give me a second to bag! I need both hands to bag things. It's really annoying. When I'm waiting to to pay as someone's bagging my things, I hold my money closer to myself instead of impatiently holding it out near their face. Then when they're ready, I hand it to them. Not hard.

--And just one little thing. Why is it SO HARD to read and comprehend what you're reading. People have selective reading, I swear. At my store, after you slide your card it says "Please enter your 5-digit zip code and press <enter>" People will read out loud "Please enter 5-digit......I don't have a five digit..?"
Or they'll read out loud "Please enter 5-digit....press enter. Oh, press enter! *push*" Without entering their zipcode, in which case nothing happens. Argggg

Sucky customers must take out their brains as they enter the store & retrieve them on the way out. You could have a person who's college educated with degrees up the old poop chute that as soon as they enter the store turns into a quivering mass of suckiness with no sense, common or otherwise.

Some stores collect zip codes (Bed Bath & Beyond does this, but the cashier asks for it at the start of the transaction). It's for marketing purposes so they can get an idea of where their customer base is and better target their advertising and whatnot. I'm guessing this company has just made it an automated thing...since a lot of cashiers probably skip it because it can be aggravating.

I'd like to see how they deal with People who don't have a 5-digit Zip code, and instead have a 6-character Postal Code, instead. :P

They probably just tap in 99999, though.

We were actually given codes for customers without US zip codes, when we first started doing the zip code survey a couple years ago. I don't think they do it now though--but it was something like 11111 for Canada and 22222 for Mexico or the other way around. I get very few people from either place. No special codes for any other country.

So, when we get the folks from the UK or say Australia (which happens far more frequently than either Canadian or Mexican shoppers...I don't know why. Maybe we're a special craft store)...we just do the 99999 thing, or make one up.

Apparently though, cashiers were getting bitched at for imputing 99999 too often.

As far as I can see, the zip code survey just serves to piss the customers off. Blah blah marketing.

Also, at Walmart at least, American Express cards ask for zip codes to verify who's paying. If you don't get that right, tough luck.

I'm proof positive that if you put the wrong one in on AMEX, it declines it.

My billing address and home address zip codes are different and, without thinking, I usually put my home in.

                ZAP! WRONG! Declined!

One would think after about the 10th time of doing this in various places, that I'd get the hint.

-Well, on our machines we can skip past the zipcode by pressing cancel(for people out of the country), but I like to see who understands the thing or who needs their hand held through the whole process.

Yeah, the only time we can't skip it for American Express. Won't do anything without a zipcode
