Maybe It's just where I've lived but I thought that business and residential lines had different prefixes, and that mobiles had their own area codes.

I once accidently called the wrong number (but noticed and hung up before an answer -- then the person called back later on....)... of course I was surprised it didn't happen more frequently: when you live in the 618 area code, work in the 217 area code, get calls from the 310 (and other similar numbers from around there Los Angeles area), 312 (Chicago and surrounding areas), and have family in the 219 area code....

Let's just say I discovered that 219-xxx-xxxx was a residential/business, 217-xxx-xxxx was a cell phone/pager in Central Illinois. How'd I find out? My work pager number was the same as my grandmother's phone number - except for the area code.

LMAO. Wow... That guy is amazing.. So weird.
I had a number that was almost identical to the local police department once. We had all the same numbers, except two or three were in the opposite order. I can't remember exactly anymore. Didn't receive as many calls for the police as one might expect, so it was just enough to still amuse me.

I started getting phone calls a couple of months back for a Susan. It was usually once or twice a month, from different guys. Usually they would get pissed or hang up as soon as I answered. This kept going on for like 4 or 5 months until I realized they were calling for a girl I used to date like five years ago. I was finally able to track her down and she realized (unintentional she swore) that when asked at a bar for her number, she would just rattle off ten quick digits. Well for some reason, she started using my old cell number and I started getting the assholes she wanted to give a fake number to. It never happened again after that but it was annoying as hell for a while and I sure as hell never wanted to see her again after our relationship ended (To be honest, she is a bit of a trainwreck and I wouldn't be surprised if this was some lame attempt to get involved with me again). I wasn't even in the same damn state at the time so it wasn't like I could just show up at her place and ask her to stop it. I seriously thought about changing my number at the time.

And then he would've called back demanding a manager to fire the person on the phone who cursed at him.
Then I'd just have someone else pretend to be my "manager" and cuss him out too!

When I was home sick once...I got quite a few calls like that. They simply kept redialing the same number. After multiple calls, I'm no longer polite--I got even with the last caller. I had my computer on, turned the sound up as far as it would go, loaded up MS Train Sim...and then hit the air horns. Someone got an earful of Amtrak F40PH in all its glory

I used to live in a much smaller town then I do currently. The businesses and the residents had the same area code. As I said, I used to get get calls for Sam's Club all the time. Most of the people were polite so I was polite back to them. One of my friends even called Sam's Club by accident when he was trying to call me. It really was a very easy mistake to make.

If the guy had called me a third time, I'd have cussed him out or maybe even plotted to call him when it was 2am for him as revenge.

My last number used to be one digit off from a local temp agency. I used to get calls galore, most of whom could barely string words together to form sentences, about how they were looking for jobs, and so on. It was very annoying, and as most of them mumbled, so I couldn't understand their message, I never called back, just deleted the messages.

You would think that if they were calling a business, the fact that the message DID NOT say "thank you for calling xyz employment agency, and so on" but "hi, you've reached my number, no one's here, leave a message" they'd get a clue! But no.

The only time I ever called anyone back was a woman who left a very concise, easy to understand message about how she had not received her check. I called her back, and let her know that she had misdialed, as it was pay related, and I didn't want her to sti and wait for a callback that wouldn't come. She was very appreciative!

There was a two week stint a few years back where I would get a call every day from some company looking for someone named Mary.

My name is no where even close to sounding like Mary. First, middle or last.

I worked very early in the morning, and then had school in the afternoons and evenings, and, as luck would have it, they kept calling in the middle of my nap time. I needed my naps to stay semi-functional, and to be interrupted left a very cranky Tireana.

Got to the point that I became very short with the lady on the other side. Went something along the lines of: "This is Tireana Dorcha's cell phone. I'm Tireana. I've had this phone number for the last six years. There is no Mary here, and if you keep calling me I will sue you for harrassment." (Which is a lie seeing as I have no idea if I could, and I wouldn't truely have the motivation to get off my lazy bum and go after someone due to a case of misinformation)

But, no more calls commenced, and I was able to enjoy my nap times in peace again!

When I first got my phone, oh boy. Someone by the name of Roy Rodrigez had it before me. How do I know his name? No fewer then 3 bill collectors calling me a day. Numerous texts being sent to me in spanish, numerous people calling and leaving messages in spanish. Even though I'm female, and my voicemail has me saying in English "This is Kyree, leave a message."

Some of them even accused me of stealing his phone. And of course, lovely T-mobile, even though these people were racking up my texts, and minutes, harassing me, couldn't/wouldn't block their numbers, or change my phone number. I could change it, if I paid for it though!

The only time I got a call for someone I didn't know and actually called them back was when a doctor called me, thinking it was one of his patients' mothers. The reason I called him back is because of the message he left. "So-and-so's tests and MRI's have come back, and he needs to come back to the hospital right away." They had left two messages like that before I had woken up and checked my voice mail.

I live in a rental property and had to deal with the previous owner's bill collectors for a while, they just didn't belive me when I told them that "Chris" no longer lived here. And the kicker was, they'd ask me if I knew where he was, I don't even know him! If I knew where he was I'd tell you so you could annoy him there instead of me here!

I'm one digit off from a doctor's office, so I get a lot of confused old ladies on the phone, to the point I have the doc's right number dog eared in the phone book when they accidentaly get me.

I'm vindictive sometimes, but I don't think I could bring myself to potentially endanger someone like that.
