  • We're Not A Charity (Warning - Language)

Why is it people no longer expect to pay to do business with a company? We offer a service, we charge for it, accept this fact and get on with your life already!

    Two separate incidents:

    1) Asshat #1 calls and demands I lower his rate. Just like that - poof, he wants it reduced. Imagine walking into 7-11 to buy a beer for $3.00, but you tell the cashier, "I demand you sell this to me for less." Hey, Dipshit - if you don't like the price, go somewhere else. This is what I have to offer, and this is what I'm charging. I don't care if my competitor down the road is offering a similar product for 5% less - even if it's similar in function, it's not the exact same.

    2) Asshat #2 calls to delete a vehicle from his insurance policy, leaving just one remaining car. I tell him his new premium, and he says, "FOR ONE CAR!?!?!" Well, yes, you idiot - that ONE CAR is a 2008 PORSCHE SUV 4x4. What the fuck did you think, the insurance would be comparable to a '73 Plymouth Volare? Think! And, on top of that, why are you bitching about the insurance? If you can afford a $70,000 automobile, and actually go out to buy it, you have no right to bitch about the insurance rates. Maybe you shouldn't live like a Hollywood movie star if you're that uncomfortable with your budget.

    ALSO - two quick rant-and-raves:

    1) I honestly do not give a flying fuck if your best friend/neighbor/co-worker/whatever pays a hundred dollars less per month for their insurance. Perhaps your three DUI's and $70,000 vehicle are why you're paying so much. Deal with it.

    2) I could care less if you threaten me that you're going to shop around. Good - go. That's one less Assclown who's going to bitch about our rates. Like I really believe our competitor's rates are that much cheaper, especially with your three DUI's and $70,000 vehicle.

That first thing you mentioned, I think you can thank those "consumer awareness" blogs, sites and TV news stories for that.

Many of them offer the "tip" that you can apparently often get a lower rate on something (credit card, insurance, etc,) just by calling and asking.

Yeah, I've seen those, and they piss me off. Like I'm going to walk into your store and demand "Rock Band" for fity dollars less because Wal-Mart sells it for that much. Realistically, I would expect you to say, "Then go to Wal-Mart."

      I would.

A $70,000 vehicle and 3 DUI's? Who was it who called you, Lindsey Lohan?

Say it with me kids: EPIC FAIL.

Money must be no object to that guy if he can drive around stewed in such an expensive vehicle. I'd be afraid to drive a $70,000 vehicle while sober. I'm certainly not a celebrity or a big industrialist or some other Vaguely Important Person who could afford to treat a Porsche SUV like a $300 beater purchased out of the newspaper classifieds.

That's actually true. I did call to get my Bank of America Visa rate lowered and they did it just because I asked.

BTW - I did ask nicely and if they weren't going to do it for me, I was just going to use a different card.

However, I completely understand that insurance is pretty carefully calculated based on a lot of factors. The only time I got my rate lowered was when I moved (I moved closer to work, thus drove less).

The only time I've asked about my credit card rate...was last year. Until then, I'd always paid the bill on time, and never carried a balance. Then I had some things come up--MG bills, A/C unit, etc.--and had no choice but to use the card. When I called them up, I simply asked if there was any way to lower it. They said I was already at the lowest rate (go me!), so there was nothing they could do. I thanked them for their time, and that was it. Did I scream about how "unfair" it was? Nope. I ran up the balance myself, so it was nobody's fault but my own. Of course it didn't stay that way--I paid it off right before Christmas. (How's *that* for a present? ) Oh wait, there's that logic again...

That was just like where I work. We would have New Move In specials. 90% percent of the tennets actually thought they should get the discount again and again and again.

I think that in that case, it might have been possible, but then again, I know of certain services that will lower your rate on request, if it's polite and you've always been on time with bills etc. People like the above, who are abusive and/or don't pay bills really don't deserve it.

Thankfully people don't haggle over stuff like that here in Australia (games etc.) or at least that I've seen...

Something like that happened to me once. Customer wanted a discount on something because he simply "didn't feel like paying that much." To his credit, he was polite about it, and asked me to get him a manager instead of expecting me to lower the price myself, but he was still an idiot. I overheard the manager laughing about the customer in the office later, so I assume he didn't give him a discount. And in case anyone's wondering, he didn't appear to be from another country where it's customary to haggle. He was as American as I am.

I think that one made the comic strip on here, but I'm too lazy to go searching for it.

I don't think there's anything inherently sucky in asking for a lower rate-- politely-- and taking my business to another entity that will give me the rate I'm looking for. It's just simple comparison shopping. Why should I pay more than I have to? Being an asstard about it, though, is where all the suck stems from.

I think it's entirely possible to be an informed consumerist and still respectful toward the employees you're dealing with.

Edit @ MadMike: What I just said notwithstanding, that still ranks as a WTF moment. I'd never try to haggle in retail. That's just silly. Asking if there are any sales or promotions, maybe, but not just flat out asking for a lower price.

Automobile insurance can vary greatly for the exact same coverage from company to company. It is calculated on multiple factors as well (the vehicle itself, the driver, family members driving, age, experience, prior accidents/tickets/violations, etc.) It can get really sticky writing an insurance policy. Back when I worked for an agent, I've seen quotes for liability/comprehensive/collision coverage all for under $50 per month for a really good driver and an average car to upwards of $1000 per month for that 16 year old boy that just had to have the brand spanking new mustang GT. My kids will drive beaters................

Actually, a customer once came in to where I worked, asked the price of a couple services, and after considering them, suggested one other thing I could do and asked, "You'll do that free of charge, won't you?"

And I did say, "Ma'am, we're not the Sisters of Mercy."

                          She was not amused.

Getting married actually LOWERED my husband's insurance--even after putting me and a second car on the policy. It moved him from a moderately risky demographic of single late 20s male to a much-less-risky demographic of married late 20s male. Of course, we both have clean records and both drive cars that are about 15 years old, so that helps too.

My auto insurance lowered my premium by nearly 20%. Granted, I haven't claimed from them for over a year, and I asked very nicely.
                              e.g.

"Hi there! I'm not sure if this is possible, but I was wondering if you guys could maybe have a look and see if my premiums could be reduced a little bit, please?"
I honestly thought it would go down by about 5% max, so when they said 19%, I nearly fell off my chair...
