I was so much in shock that a customer did this that I had to wait a day to post it. But that's a good thing since the story got better!
Two days ago a guy comes in wanting to buy one of our HUGE HP all-in-one printers. We were out of stock and the only store that had one was 20-30 miles away. Customer had no problem, they REALLY wanted this printer. So I get on the phone to make sure the other store had one.
While I was on the phone, the customer asked if we had a USB cable that fit his blackberry. I said yes and told him where to look since I was on hold with the other store.
When I got off the phone and found the customer, he had ripped open the package for the cable and it looked to me like he was trying to see if it was the right cable. Since he was headed for the register, I let it slide, thinking he found what he was looking for. I told him the printer was on hold for him.
I got pulled aside by another customer and when I turned around the first customer was gone... and so was the cable. The package, though, was right there on a pallet of copy paper.
WTF?!? I just spent 10 minutes with him to put a $300 printer on hold at another store and he steals a fucking $30 cable?!? NO WAY! If this guy would steal a cable, practically in FRONT of me, what else will he do? Bad check? Fake returns? Stolen credit card?
So I called the other store and asked for a manager. No manager picked up.
So I called the other store AGAIN and asked for a manager. Still no. Repeat 3 times.
So I called the other store and said "This is <Mara> from store <number>. There's a security issue headed your way and if your manager would like to know about it, have them call me back.
5 mins later I got a call back. The manager down there couldn't come to the phone right away because ALL OF THE GM'S IN THE DISTRICT were in a meeting in that store. Hehehheh. I related the story of the cable, setting up this guy to walk into a dozen or two managers asking if he needed help.
Cut to today.
Look who walks in with the printer! It's Mr Cable wanting to return this machine. He claims the other store sold him a repacked printer.
*TWEEEET*
TIME OUT!
I call BULLSHIT!
We do NOT resell open printers and such. Especially HP, because HP gives us full credit to return them. Why would we risk an issue or mark something down when we could get full credit from them.
*Tweeet* Time in.
So we pull the printer from the box and low-and-behold the serial numbers don't match. Of course he claims the other store switched it. We told him we weren't taking it back. He wanted to leave it and come back later to do the return because he 'had a meeting'. Yeah, right.
We knew he'd try something like that. He broke his machine, it was outside warranty and he wanted a new one. SO he'd get a box and then try to return it. Well, WE CHECK SERIAL NUMBERS! IN YOUR FACE, SCAM-MAN!
The manager also dropped a hint "Did you get a cable yesterday when you were here?" Maybe that's why he suddenly had a meeting.
I still can't believe this guy had the BALLS to steal a cable right in front of me... AFTER I spent all that time trying to help him.... and THEN try to come back and scam us with it! Didn't even have the decency to try a different store.
