This particular publishing rep comes to the campus on business, & a male co-worker carpools with her. She came yesterday when the full sign was one. The garage was reserved when she came yesterday, & so I told her "I'm sorry, but the full sign is on because the garage is full." She asked me where other parking is, & gave her the alternatives. The full sign was not working properly today because the Parking office does not want to disable the feature allowing access cards to be read. So now it is on open. I wish it was on full for this irritated publishing rep & her sucky male co-worker. Here is how the conversation went.
me: me
irritated publishing rep: ipr
me: "Hi, how may I help you?"
ipr: "We are here on business. We have some appointments on campus."
me: "Which department are you going to?"
ipr: *wondering why I am asking this question. There is a reason why I do this.*
ipr: "One dept. is the Physics dept."
me: * I look at the event list, & there is not a reservation for anyone going to that dept.*
me: "I'm sorry, but even though the open sign is on, the garage is reserved. Every parking spot is already reserved & already paid for, & I can only allow people on the event list to park. Unfortunately I do not see a reservation for anyone going to the Physics dept. I'm sorry, but I cannot allow anyone else to park because there are no parking spots for anyone else to park in."
ipr: "What is the garage reserved for?"
me: "I'm sorry, but I cannot answer that question."
That is when she became irritated. Her tone of voice was irritated at this point.
ipr: "So is there a new policy I do not know about? We come here on business almost every week, & we need to park."
She was irritated at this point, & I did not want to get into an arguement.
me: "The dept. I report to, Visitor Parking, reserves parking spots for people coming to the campus. That is their "job". I get an event list every day, & when there are only enough parking spaces for people on the event list, I cannot let ayone else park because there are no other parking spaces available for anyone else. I have had this job since March 2006."
The phone inside the booth rings, & it's "Kim" calling me. She has a rule that I always have to answer the phone no matter what I am doing. So I tell the irritated publishing rep "I'm sorry, one moment please"
"Kim" tells me there will be a guest arriving to see "David Smith" in the President's office. Since I cannot turn away anyone going to the President's office, I have to let him in.
I get back to the irritated publishing rep.
me: "I'm sorry, but the garage is reserved, & I cannot allow anyone else to park. When the garage is reseved, a parking space has to be reserved in order for anyone to park. Since you come here on business on a weekly basis, the best thing to do is to contact the dept. you are going to & ask them to reserve a spot for you. Other publishing reps do the same thing. Have them call x7150 or x7868, but it has to be done at least 2 days in advance."
*Visitor Parking/Community Relations wants all parking requests submitted at least 2 days in advance*
At this point her sucky male co-worker speaks
sucky male co-worker: smc

smc: "We are here on business, & we need to park. We are willing to pay. Can't we just park & have the dept. we are going to call you?"
me: "I'm sorry, but the dept. I report to makes the rules, & I do have to follow them."
*I got this idea from Moonchild*
smc: "I understand that, but we will pay for our parking. Isn't there just one space left?"
me: *ok...what part of "I'm sorry, but the dept. I report to makes the rules, & I do have to follow them don't you "get"?*
me: "I'm sorry, but I am not authorized to override my manager's authority"
*this is your cue to ask to speak to her, but you did not do that*
smc: "We will pay for our parking. Can't you just let us in?
me: "I'm sorry, but I cannot bend the rules for anyone."
smc: "So if a homeless man wanted to park..."
The female publishing rep stopped him at this point. Good idea since that did not make any sense.
ipr: "So who is your manager?"
me: "Kim Johnson"
She finally leaves. I give "Kim" a heads up.
