  • Invoking "30 minutes or it's Free" Scam (lengthy)

I didn't take the original order, but it left my co worker feeling a bit unsettled because the customer wanted two of our "$5.00" pizzas. When they were told we didn't have "$5.00" pizzas they proceeded to go ahead and order two large pizzas and didn't seem at all phased when their total came out to be $32.00. Feeling that this was a bit sketchy, my co worker asked if they were going to pay cash. They said that was fine. Then my co worker gave them a their expected wait time of between 45 and 75 minutes due to the fact that we're in the middle of an extremely busy Friday night.

So we go ahead and make up the order. My co worker is expressing his concern that there may be some shenanigans going on. We get the pizzas out of the oven and are waiting for drivers to return. All in all its been about 25 minutes.

    The phone rings. I answer.

    ME: ....Pizza.
SC: Yeah. We ordered a pizza about half an hour ago and it's not here yet.
ME: What was the name on the order?
    SC: (Gives name)
ME: I see your order and also see you were given a wait time of between 45 and 75 minutes.
SC: Yeah. But if it's not here in thirty minutes, it's free, right?
    ME: Nope.
    SC: Nope?
    ME: Right.

By this time my co worker has picked up the other extension and is listening in.

SC: But the guy who took my order said we could have it free if it wasn't here in thirty minutes.
    ME: No he didn't.
    SC: Yes he did.
ME: Look we never tell customers their order is free after thirty minutes.
    SC: HE did.
    ME: No he didn't.

At this point my co worker chimes in.

CW: Hey, I'm the guy who took your order. I've worked here ten years and I never tell anyone their order is free after thirty minutes. That doesn't even make sense especially when I told you the wait would be up to seventy-five minutes.
SC: You've worked there ten years?
CW: Don't change the subject. I don't appreciate people misrepresenting what I tell then in order to scam us.

    They hung up.

Both of us report the incident to the owner who gets on the phone verifies their order and verifies that they're paying cash.

He decides to send the order out, but wants someone else to go along with the driver as a precaution. Another co worker volunteers.

Right as the order is going out the door. They call back again. This time I tell them their order is on the way.

After the driver and his tag along got back to the store, we ask if anything out of the ordinary happened i.e they tried to pay with a check.
Apparently, the customer and his buddies came to the door with only a twenty, bitching that their order was late. The driver said "hey, this isn't Domino's, we got your order here in the time frame we told you." So they went back and got the rest of the money together. But as they were going back inside they were mumbling something about how they should have kicked the driver's ass.

Guess it's a good thing another guy went along with the driver.

I wonder if that was part of their plan in the first place.

Needless to say I'm going to be less than accommodating to these douche bags if they try to order again.

I have a funny feeling they're going to try some more shit tomorrow. Like bitch about getting the wrong pizzas etc...

    We'll see.
    I don't like your attitude!
Yeah? Well you're not EATING my attitude!

Good precaution, having a backup person. I doubt they'd have REALLY beaten him up, though. Not when you have their address and phone number on file.

Unless they were, like, REALLY stupid. Which, from the sound of things...

      They should be banned

they were heard to threaten a worker, even if they didnt intend it, you DO NOT threaten people ever!

maybe its a sore point for me because K was a pizza delivery guy for 5 years during uni or maybe its because a 13 year old was jailed in NZ for being part of a gang who beat and killed a pizza delivery person a few years back

but you just dont threaten that shit EVER!

Does any place actually do that 30 minutes or free thing anymore? I haven't heard of any place doing that since I was a kid and I didn't even like pizza when I was a kid.

I actually forced myself to eat it because the Ninja Turtles liked it. ( Yes, seriously. Sad, I know ).

        Now I like it. >.>

        Thank you, TMNT.

One of their recent slogans was "You've got 30 minutes" With a disclaimer at the bottom more or less saying that 30-min. delivery was not a guarantee. Guess they finally got tired of giving away free pizza.

Dominoes has changed their ads about... 4 years ago I believe, to where at the end they say: "You got 30min, is just an estimate and times can take longer due to traffic and safety concerns, actual delivery times will vary."
Crono: sounds like the machine update became a clusterf*ck..
pedersen: No. A clusterf*ck involves at least one pleasurable thing (the orgasm at the end).

That's SC logic at its finest. If you can't get a freebie based on a company's policy, make one up that is more to your liking!

The "30 minutes or it's free" thing is dangerous, because you don't want delivery guys driving like maniacs to meet the deadline. I'm happy that no one seems to be offering it anymore.

Going in with another driver was a good call, but I would suggest banning their asses since they did try and scam you guys more than once and the fact that they did threaten violence to one of your employees. I've never had a job making deliveries or anyting close to that, but I really think the 30 minutes or it's free kinda policies are bullshit.

We'd have people try to scam us when I worked at Pizza Hut but that one beats them. I do like what the manager said once though. (paraphrased) 'Just once, I'd like someone to be honest and say that they don't have any money but they're really hungry and could they please have a pizza. Who knows? Maybe I'll be feeling nice that day and give them one.'

I can shed some light. I worked for dominoes when I was 18.

The actual '30 minutes or FREE' promotion ended in...

                      ready???....................

                      1987

                      Yes, 22 years ago.

In early '87, they changed it to '30 minutes or 3.00 off'. Then after a couple years of that, they stopped.

There were apparently lawsuits pertaining to accidents caused by drivers who were pressured by management to speed and break other traffic laws in order to deliver.

I know that in recent years they've capitalized on the 'fresh in 30 minutes' tagline, but it didn't have the meaning it did way back in the day.

And yes, it was absolute HELL. I actually had people greeting me on their porches with a fucking stopwatch.

Dominos ended the '30 mins, or $3 off' thing because one of their drivers got killed. His family sued Dominos, and won somewhere in the neighborhood of $90M. I think that was in 1990. As I understand it, the settlement prohibits Dominos from ever offering a time guarantee.

When I was in NJ, the Dominos a town or two over could get me my pizza in about 20 minutes.

The local place a few minutes away couldn't deliver a pizza to my place in under 45 minutes, despite being quoted 25-30, for anything.

*Note--My house wasn't hard to find. I tipped more than well. I ordered from both places roughly an equal amount of time.

I have sorta a similar situation. I order from one place about 75 percent of the time, and they know me and that I tip well so I always get it in about 1/2 the time of the quote.

The second place I order from about 25 percent of the time, and I tip well with them too, but they take FOREVER!!! The only time I order from them is when me and my son split the bill because he loves the place. I like it too, but I also like not starving as I wait for them to deliver. When I'm paying and my son whines about ordering from the first place, I find the 'I'm paying...its xxxxx place or I'm cooking' phrase comes in VERY handy!
