  • Oh no! What a terrible catastrophe!

Christmas Eve this year is on a Sunday. Therefore, Sunday trading hours will apply. To an SC on Wednesday afternoon who asked me about Christmas trading hours, this was intolerable. She intends to complain. Yeah, like the law will be changed just for her.

So....wait. In the UK, y'all are only allowed to be open til 4 on Sundays?

All in favor of moving to the UK, say "aye" [aye....it's a response in the affirmative in American government lol]!!

You can have 10-4 or 11-5 trading hours on Sundays. Oh joy... And extra pay, too.

We stay open 24/7, 365. I put out a sign up for holiday hours with the condition that if people didn't sign up, I'd be pickin' their shifts. Gee....they were all taken...

Sundays are a maximum of 6 hours continuous trading between 10am and 6pm for most shops, although there are exceptions. It depends on the square footage of the shop, and the items the shop sells. Shops over 3000 sq. ft. are also banned from opening on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day. Some shops allow 30 minutes "browsing time" before the official opening times - and during that half hour, the workers are not allowed to serve on checkouts or assist customers.

You also can't have deliveries to shops before 9am on Sundays in most areas of the UK.

ETA: That's only England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different regulations.

YAY! not just us who saw that on the calendar and had a mini-celebration then! The absolute BEST bit is that we have the PERFECT excuse to close on time...because it's actually ILLEGAL to stay open any longer!! GO US!

Ooh! I didn't even notice that. And we'll have to close early on New Years Eve too. Shame.
Its gonna be a nightmare getting everyone out on Christmas Eve though..we have announcements on Sundays saying that we close at 4 and everything has to be paid for by 4.15, this is a legal requirement (because of the number of hours we are legally allowed to trade). I can't imagine that happening on Christmas Eve though..imagine the uproar if we told customers queueing at 4.15 that we couldn't serve them..

                          I'm another one who's in a place that's 24/7 - 365.

We get holiday pay - which means if you work on a holiday you get paid time and a half.

PLUS - if you are a full time employee for x amt of time - you get paid 8 hours extra on the pay period that a holiday falls on. So, even if you aren't working on the holiday, you still get an extra 8 hours on your check.

Let me get this clear. It's the law and not just store policy? Does this apply to all types of businesses?

That's when you close the front doors at 3:30 so there's 45 mins to clear the store lol.
