This one happened a couple days ago. I work mornings usually and most of the time I open with the same manager, and sometime the Store Manager. Lately (still! *grumble*) it's JUST been me and the one manager opening, for an hour or two until one more person gets in, and then one more at noon. Opening and maintaining this store properly should have AT LEAST three, preferably four, people. But.. yeah. Anyhow...

I run the register up front while the manager runs around and tries to get her duties done as well as help any and all customers that need help away from the registers. The person who opens in the book department usually makes some coffee before we open, which is free (in small cups) to customers if they wish some.

Of course, there's no one in books, and it's nearly Valentine's Day. We're busy. I cannot leave the register unmanned under no circumstances (unless it's some sort of an emergency).

    OM - Old man.
    Me -
    M - Manager that I open with.
    MM - Music Manager

OM - *comes up to the counter behind me, on the other side of the register, near the entrance* Excuse me...
Me - Yes, did you have a question?
OM - Yeah, is there any coffee this morning?
Me - Oh, I'm sorry, we're really shorthanded today, it's not been made yet... if I get a moment I'll try and make some. Will you be around for a while?
OM - Yeah, for a couple hours probably.
Me - Okay, I'll try and make some, but I can't guarantee anything.
    OM - *walks away*
Me - *calls M* Hey M, I've got a customer wanting coffee... anything we can do right now?
M - No, we don't have anyone to make it. Tell 'em it's broken for now or something.

About half an hour later ... MM had come in by now.

MM - *on a nearby computer, trying to put a movie in the inventory that wasn't listed yet for me to ring out for a customer*
    OM - *walks up* Where's a manager?
    Me - *glances at MM*
MM - I'm one of the managers.
OM - YOU'RE a manager? *looks at the late-20's guy who's dressed like a typical skater punk type*
MM - Yes. I am. How can I help you?
OM - Oh. Well.. I've been waiting for half an hour for some coffee!
MM - We don't have anyone in books this morning, so the coffee's not been made, sorry.
OM - So I'm just not going to get any?!
    MM - Um. No. Sorry.
OM - *grunts and stomps off*

Dude. It's FREE COFFEE. It's not something that you're entitled to. If you want coffee that bad, go to a coffee shop or next door where they'll sell you a cup for a dollar.

We used to deal with that issue for the hotel/casino I bartended at. The front desk would bring the coffee cannisters over to the bar and we'd fill it with the coffee we brew there. god help us if we were too busy to fill it or have to wait for another batch to brew before we could. The worst part would be that the people complaining aren't guest of the hotel or even gamblers in the casino. They'd be customers that don't want to pay for coffee in the restaurant/buffet or even worse, employees that are too lazy to make another batch of coffee in the break room.
