  • You'll Never Work In This Town Again

We have a regular and her friend come in yesterday. They are looking at movies when the friend comes up and asks if she can use our bathroom. I tell her that our bathrooms are not for customer use.

She goes back to her friend and tells her what I said. They come up with their movies and the regular asks me the same question. Again I tell her what I told her friend. Her friend is cool with it but the regular seems offended that she's not getting her way.

"Come on, you won't get fired," she says in that annoying break the rules for me tone of voice. For the third time, more firmly, I tell her that I cannot let anyone into that bathroom.

She looks angry and as she leaves tells me that I better treat the locals with more respect because I might be looking for another local job soon. It's just so petty to threaten and harass someone who's just doing what the boss told her.

Now why is that? People get all pissed off when you tell them that you're doing your job & they look at you like you've lost your mind.
Like we're supposed to circumvent the rules just to accomodate them just so they can stop from going to management to get us fired. Doesn't work like that.
AND if we did what they wanted then we'd lose our jobs & they wouldn't care. Phooey on them.

Those people always crack me up. But with the way the economy is going right now, if they ask for my name, I ask them for theirs. Should they be the cause of my losing my job, they will have a nice civil suit on their hands.
If you don't like my attitude, talk to the manager!!! Oh, wait, that would be me!!

Yes, I'm the manager. I'm also known as "the brick wall".

I used to have people try to play the local card with me. I don't think they ever threatened my job, but they said something along the lines of "You should learn who the locals are" after I said they couldn't do something. Or the lady who said basically the same thing, only tacking on "I've lived here for 14 years!" to which I replied, "I've lived here for 16". Yeah, sorry, getting off track. I believe my point was going to be that I doubt she was actually a local, and if she was, everyone would already know she's a jerk, so don't worry about it.

they started doing that back in virginia at the local planet music. that annoyed me personally cos at one point they weren't but suddenly they changed their minds.

luckily there was a bookstore next door tho.
not sure what it is about shopping for books and music, etc... *shrug*

          and off topic...

            Um, no.

If boss fires you for cause, you're not likely to have grounds to sue employer.

And you can't sue a customer for reporting to management that you did something that is grounds for getting fired.

In America, it's really really hard to sue for wrongful termination.

I think what they were implying was that if a customer complained and got them fired when they HADN'T done anything wrong. Don't know about you, but I've been around these forums long enough to have read several stories about people getting fired/disciplined/reduced hours when they had actually, indeed, followed all of the 'rules', but a customer bitched and bitched and bitched (and in some cases, flat out lied), until the boss Did Something.

IANAL, but I have a feeling there might be something actionable if that happened.

If I remember my law courses (Business Law, but we touched upon personal law as my professor uses Law 1 for personal, and law 2 for business), it could fall under either slander, or defamation of character. You would have to prove that it was false, and that your converstaion had nothing to do with the intimate business between your two customers.

                  That's correct.

I took the comment to be about getting fired when a customer complains the employee didn't follow the rules.

Oh, no. If I were to blame for whatever happened and got canned, then I would definitely take my punishment like a big girl. But if I know I didn't do anything wrong and still got fired because some EW bitches and moans their head off, that's when I would go at them with guns blazing. I wouldn't care if I won my case or not.

I would just go out for revenge. Find out where the SC works and go to their work and claim they're worthless and lazy and incompetent and stupid.

When I was a teen and working at the grocery store and the one EW bitch got me suspended, I was so tempted to find out where she worked and file a complaint against her. She flat out lied and got me SUSPENDED for 3 days and she received so many gift certificates and freebies......she damn well would have had it coming to her if I had done it.

I knew her name (because I asked for a written copy of the complaint typed up by management, and I wrote a rebuttal, so I had all her info), but I never got around to doing it.

Edit: not the best idea in the world, but it's just the type of thing I'd do. I'm the kind of person where, if you wrong me and try to bring me down, YOU are coming with me and you'll get it worse than I will. I've been cooking something up for a bunch of cowokers for quite a while, just in case they try anything with me.
