Okay, now I have no idea what to call people. Do you all have a different preference?
That's the problem... everybody has a different choice. My name generally works okay... just don't overuse it. Other than that, I'm fine with "Hey, you!"

There's a disturbing trend where I work to ask customers, "Thank you, Mr. Smith. May I call you James?" I'm not going to do that... not now, not ever. That changes the dynamic from, "Hello, I'm theoretically a cable professional here to solve your problem," to "Hi! I'm Timmy, your cable pal! Will you be my friend?"

Actually, I would do it... but only if the company let me answer the phone in my Barney voice.

All this reminds me of a teacher I had in High School. She had earned her doctorate in Anthropology. God help you if you called her Mrs. or Ms. instead of Dr.
Wow - I've had a few that are just the opposite. One is a doctoral student, and the other has her PhD. They told us the first day of class "call me [first name]. If you address me as Mrs, Ms, Doctor...etc, I'll laugh at you for 10 minutes then ask what you want". It's so much more personal that way...

At my current job (called in sick today), I talk to people from all over the country, and frequently get "hon" or "dear" or the occasional "sweetie", from both sexes. Usually, it's the Southerners, but I've had that happen when talking to other geographical areas. Doesn't bother me, the tone makes it clear it's just friendliness. Being called "ma'am" by someone to whom I have stated my name (which I always do at the start of the conversation and when transferred to a new person) does irritate me slightly, but I realize that's kind of petty.

I think I'll put this in the "Can't win, don't try" folder, and recommend saying whatever you're must comfortable with.

SC: You will address me as SIR. You do NOT call customers "Hun". That is disrespectful!
            "Sorry about that, Attila."

Knowing me I'd probably would have started calling him Ma'am. I don't like getting yelled at and usually do the opposite of whatever the asshole is yelling about.

I refuse to use "Sir" or "Ma'am" on principle. Must be my inner anarchist. XD I just say "Hi" and act friendly to people, seems to work. I've been called "duck", "dear" and "hun" before by customers, usually the elderly and it doesn't bother me at all.

"Bitch" works for me. Hehe. Just don't call me late for dinner.

At work, I hide my name badge, I hate when people call me by my name when I do not even know theres. Though a few seem to have gone out of thier way to find my name badge, which tells me thier eyes are not where they should be.

After being oggled by the opposite sex with them standing there with a goofy grin on thier faces.."Ohhhh,...your name.......Gypsy." that did it. I can handle Hey Red better then my name being called by a stranger.

Generally, I don't bother with that Ma'am or Sir, I use to, but after getting my head about bit off, I no longer use those titles.

As for me and that guy..I had to laugh, knowing me though, I would have snapped back and told him that using the title of Sir is a form of respect, and respect is something one earns.

And yes, I have in the past told people that...but not any customers.

I've been referred to as "Sweetie" by a couple of customers (both female thank goodness) . I don't mind it but it's kind of weird because that's what my grandmother calls me.
