  • Don't you have to go to class first....

This afternoon was I got to play one of my least favorite games... I call it Re-Shopping for WIC.

It started when the checker Called: Dairy department, I need 2 12 count <store brand> large eggs to register 8.

As I am walking to the eggs I then hear the same checker: Dairy Department, I also need 1 16 ounce package of the <store brand> deluxe sliced cheese to register 8.

me: under breath otherwise known as the WIC special.....

I get to the Checker hand over the eggs and cheese, and pick up the WRONG eggs and cheese the customer bought. (large brown eggs and the <store brand> IWS cheese)

As I am putting the eggs back on the shelf I hear THE SAME checker go: Dairy Department, I need 4 Gallons of <store brand> 2% milk broght to register 8

    WTF?

So I get the milk, and walk all the way back up there and pick up the 4 gallons of Vitamin D milk the customer grabbed.

and the kicker..... about 3 minutes later I hear: Dairy Pickup at the self checkout. When I get there, there in the cart are the 4 gallons of 2%, the 2 dozen large eggs and the cheese I JUST BROUGHT UP! Apparently the customer forget her WIC folder so she couldn't get her crap at all. The checker was so embarrassed she asked another checker to call me up for it.

So not only can the customer not read her fraking Voucher, but doesnt know to bring the folder? Don't you have to attend a CLASS before you get your vouchers that explains all this.... TO CHECK to see which milk you get, what type of eggs and cheese, and to make sure you have all the paperwork BEFORE you get to the store???

    Lady you fail!

Lister: This is Crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
Cat: You're right. We're Nuts! This is an insane conversation....
Lister: She'll never leave Fred and we know it.

      Oh how I hated WIC!
Although it's how I learned that cheese food is not cheese.
Excuse me, good sir paladin, can you direct me to your EVIL district?

They get bonus points if this went on in the express lane.

Around here they just changed the program in January. This means certain things have been added such as rice, mixed juice (as long as it's 100%) and my personal hate-fave bread. I think it's terrific the program is expanding. But it keeps changing and there's no support at store level. The breads are very specific brands/types/sizes. People get the brand right, but will bring up a "normal" size loaf that's twice the allowable size and always a multi-grain or otherwise super-awesome version that Is. Not. Allowed. Hell, even our own people have trouble finding which bread qualifies, so I'm not surprised the customers do. Last weekend a woman reshopped 8 loaves of bread. The first 4 were the wrong kind, so she grabbed another 4 which were still the wrong kind and finally told me to "forget it".

I worked as a cashier in high school. My manager and I once spent 15 minutes trying to convince a SC that Velveeta was not covered by her check. She was a real gem, even calling me a stuck up racist--how dare I want her kids to actually get some decent food?

                She is. She really is.

And she's even worse about produce!
                I'm bringing disdain back...with a vengeance.

That's always disturbed me. I don't want to eat something that they have to reassure you really is food.

This happened so much at my store that I would check the carts before they unloaded and then offer an escort to show them items allowed on the program. Most of the WIC customers in my area that have the problem seemed to be spanish so I would get an spanish speaking associate to go with them and explain in their language. It is very time consuming at first but well worth the effort, we usually have one customer a week that we escort but at first it seemed like everyone. Most customers were very thankful for the assistance and it saved on the embarassment at the register and also the hold up. Now we just need to take the new cashiers along with us so they can learn the program.
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Good grief! I once had a "lady" at the WD hold up my line for at least 5 minutes because she had the nerve to think that Froot Loops and Apple Jacks were covered by WIC.

Nevermind I also had the CSM on duty and the MOD . . . she still wanted to argue and use the "excuse" . . . "Well, Litter Box lets me do it . . .yadda yadda."

Of course we heard that excuse from several people . . . they couldn't give me any names when I'd ask who the employee was so I could have my manager call and double-check the info.

                      Couldn't imagine why they didn't like me . . .

For a second there I confused WIC and WIS. You can imagine the confusion until I realized.

I read the initial WIS and thought Washington Inventory Services.

What is cheese food and why is it neither cheese nor food?
