  • Visitor Parking is reserved; student: "Give me a parking ticket"

"Kim" told me yesterday that the Parking office, which controls the open sign, & campus police will soon manage the Visitor Parking garage, not her.

The garage is reserved for the job fair today, the biggest event the university has. The meter lot across the street is also blocked off for that event.

The open sign is on. Great. I call "Kim" on her cell phone because as I was walking toward the booth, I saw a white car enter the garage. She told me there was nothing she could do about that & to do my best to keep anyone not on the event list from entering the garage. According to her, I am to inform anyone not on the event list wanting to park that they will receive a parking ticket from campus police if they park in the garage.

One female student insisted on parking in the garage because the meter lot across the street was blocked off, & she only parks at the meter lot. She does not park anywhere else. I told her she will receive a parking ticket from campus police if she parks in the garage. She said "give me a parking ticket." I said "ok" & I raised the gate. She did not have a license plate #, but I got the color of her car & the first couple of numbers in the area where the license plate goes.

I go into the garage a few minutes later to find her car & to get more information. I call "Kim", to let her know what happened, what I told the student, & what she told me. She said to call dispatch & have her ticketed.

A university policeman arrived. I gave him the information he needed, & he issued her a $40.00 parking ticket.

Other visitors not on the event list were informed by me that someone not on the event list had already been ticketed by campus police for parking in the garage because it was reserved. I told them that the ticket costs $40.00. No one else not on the event list parked in the garage.
