  • Psychic Coke

A very short one from tonight.

    SC: Vodka and coke please.
    Me: Sure, coming right up.

I make the drink, and present it to the SC.

SC: And that's DIET coke right?
Me: Well...no, you never asked for diet.
SC: Oh! I can't drink this! I'm diabetic you know! I need diet!

I made a new drink because I couldn't be bothered with an argument. But apparently I was supposed to be abe to tell he was diabetic just by looking at him.

My first thought was wondering if vodka had a lot of sugar. And then I wondered if you put a cherry on top

Did you ask the customer to TELL YOU what he needed in the future? That, or tell him you love the game twenty questions (as in, guessing which drink he wants), but that you charge a dollar per question.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

If you're diabetic, you really shouldn't have alcohol in the first place.

Alcohol lowers blood sugar, but messes with medications - your call

(yes, I am diabetic, but I'm not giving up my alcohol )

and obviously should be asking for diet in the first place if that's what he wants.

As a bartender, I just LOVE people who use the word "coke" interchangeably with "diet coke." Sorry, but no. If you want diet, ask for diet. If you ask for coke, you are getting coke. Tough noogies, asswipe.

Yeah, I wish. Sadly, I have had to remake a few drinks because of these vocabulary-challenged individuals.

Its like when people ask for gin and tonic. I am never surprised by the amount of people who say "Actually, can I have slimline tonic?" after it has been poured.

I've gotten that, too. But since we don't have slimline tonic, diet tonic, diet sprite, etc., well, sorry, not gonna happen.

Thank goodness. I am so glad I don't work in a bar with diet tonic or diet sprite.

I am, however, often surprised by the people who don't just ask for it, but EXPECT it to be there. How many bars have you been in that actually have these mixers? Seriously.....

which is why I specify red lable. If I am actually getting Coke (rare these days) By God I want the Corn Syrup!

The only "diet" stuff we sell is slimline tonic or diet coke. I've been bitched at a few times because we don't have diet lemonade. One customer even said "There's a shop next door, why don't you just buy some from there?"

They were not impressed with my reply: "Why don't you buy it?"

i agree; alcohol is sugar, for the most part, and if this schmuck is diabetic, they shouldn't be drinking alcohol, forget the coke issue.

yes, i'm psychic, i knew you wanted diet coke because you're a diabetic moron.

                      sheesh.

can't recall any bar i've been in to have diet coke or diet soda, period; this one hails from the land of fairies, unicorns and shiny rainbows.

Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)

Why don't we have diet lemonade, diet sprite, or diet tonic?

Two reasons. 1. I AM NOT THE PERSON IN CHARGE OF PURCHASING THIS SHIT, YOU FUCKING MORONS!

                        2. Far more importantly, we get asked for this stuff far less often than it would be worth our effort to stock it. Personally, I can't remember any requests for diet lemonade, but I have been asked for diet sprite and diet tonic maybe, MAYBE, half a dozen times each since I've been working at The Bar. I've been there over two years now.

Now an example of a non-sucky customer in a similar situation. There is a regular at the Waterfront Bar who drinks rum and Coke. I capitalize Coke for a reason. See, he hates Pepsi. The Waterfront Bar has Pepsi, not Coke. Is he sucky about this? No. He simply brings in his own can of Coke, orders his rum and cola without the cola, and the bartender simply pours him rum over ice in the appropriate sized glass. He adds his Coke, no muss, no fuss, he's happy with his drink, happy that the bartenders know his particular proclivities with this, and everyone comes out ahead. Why? Because he is not an ass goblin that thinks the world revolves around him.

Say what? I have yet to be in a bar that DOESN'T have diet coke. So many people drink it, it's a must to have, not just in restaurants, but in bars. So many people like rum and diet, this and diet, that and diet, etc. Personally I can't stand the stuff (and don't drink caffeine anyways), but I can't imagine running a bar without it.

Actually, hard liquor is not the same as sugar. It can affect your sugar levels, but you burn it off in a different way. I don't know how to explain it, I'd have to look it up. But I do know you can drink hard liquor on Atkins because of the way your body processes it. And if you DO drink it on Atkins, it's like jet fuel. You'll be a cheap date, I can tell you that.

Now, as for diabeties, yeah, I would imagine you'd have to really be careful drinking it. You can drink it, you just have to watch your levels, as I understand it.

Alcohol lowers blood sugar quickly. It is okay for diabetics to drink it with food. When we eat out, my mum always asks for a glass of water with her meal, she drinks that until she has eaten something and then starts on her glass of wine.
