A certain popular radio talk show host who gives himself a certain political label had a book come out Tuesday. We got 20 copies in; within hours they were sold out.
10 times a day since then I've had people asking for it. So I explain we have more coming in and I can hold one for them. And almost every time I get this:
"WHY didn't you get more copies in?" >suspicious tone<
I get this every single time a political book comes out that is written by a popular person who gives themselves the same political label as said talk show host. Here's what I want to say:
"We do not have a political affiliation. We are a store and as such our primary objective is to MAKE MONEY. We will sell any book that makes us money no matter what it is about. If "How to Make Meth and Eat Children" became a best seller and made us tons of money, we would put it right out front. We didn't order more of >person with a certain political label's< book because we weren't aware of how much MONEY it was going to make us."
It is only ever when books by people with this certain political label come out. I know there are crazies on both sides, but I only catch this kind of conspiracy theory flack from this one label.
I told my boss today how frustrating this is, and he replied that it's all a marketing ploy anyway! Publishers intentionally underprint certain titles, then the writers go on the radio or TV and talk about how all bookstores are owned by people of the opposite political label and are surpressing books by writers of the other label. This whips their fans into a frenzy of outrage and they come in droves to demand the books and abuse poor bookstore employees.
Bastards.
(I know the 'political label' thing is confusing, but I don't want to offend any posters who might belong to the certain political label I mean).
