The difference betwen a take-a-penny-leave-a-penny tray and the Tip Jar:
A take-a-penny tray is meant for you to put pennies you get as change or take a penny that you need if you have something like a "$5.01" purchase.
A Tip jar is for employees. Usually, people put change or dollar bills in there. Considering that some people may make minimum wage or below, they need that money.
Now obviously, the tip jar should not be bigger than your hand, since that gives people PLENTY or opportunity to steal the money from it. Or like what happened today at Subway....
TJT = Tip-jar-thief
CW = Coworker
Me: =
CW: that'l be $5.34.
TJT: *takes out a mixture of dollar bills and coins that totals to $5.45*
CW: Your change is $0.10.
TJT: *nodnods and leaves*
Me: ...that dude just paid with money he stole from the Tip Jar!
CW: >.<
