  • Solar Control is beyond me

Due to the nature of my job, I do not get many SCs anymore but this one was amusing. I work in a Satellite Communications job, anyone that does work in that field knows that during spring during this time. The sun is causing interference to dishes. The mechanic is, the sun is behind the satellite, and due to the sun putting out a stronger signal, the dishes on the sites are tracking it instead. This customer was complaining that he had to force the dish to track the correct satellite and asked if there was anything I can do about it?

His complaint was he wanted me to do something about the SUN disrupting his communications...

Doesn't your company use any powers to move the sun?

    Silly customer

Why didn't you just do what Mr. Burns did in that Simpsons episode? I mean, really now, is blocking out the sun for a customer that hard?

Tell him you'll move the sun right after he kisses Uranus.

But wouldn't that make Pluto jealous?

Um sorry, but I would have asked too.

Not so much "can you change the sun" as "do you have less sensitive equipment or an upgrade to fix this known issue".

"Is there anything you can do about this?" encompasses "replace my gear with better gear" not just "move the sun".

I remember something like this from waaaay back when I was little - the cable company used to have a "community bulletin board" channel (usually things like "The school is having a bake sale on Saturday from 11-2") - and twice a year they would post ads about how the sun was affecting the satellites, this was normal and would resolve itself within 10-15 minutes.

Of course, I don't remember seeing anything like this happen lately (within the last 20 years or so) so maybe the cable companies have better systems now - or maybe I'm just not watching enough TV
