Since there are no classes on Friday's at the university where I work, the parking lots around the campus have plenty of open spaces.
Testing services provides placement tests for prospective students, but they rarely reserve spots for people taking the tests. When the garage is reserved, then they have to park somewhere else, but they need money (cash & change) since I do not receive change to make change.
Luckily the full sign was on. I picked up the event list at dispatch which "Kim" makes. According to "Kim", the director of Community Relations & the only employee in that dept., the Parking office is over Visitor parking, but she makes the event list. While I was signing the sign in sheet, the phone inside dispatch rang. The guy working at the front desk answered it, & told the person at the other end the garage is reserved. "Nancy" from the Parking office was up front. After the person told the guy what they were here for, the guy turned to "Nancy" & told her the person was going to Testing services to take a placement test. "Nancy" said "no" in a tone of voice like *don't look at me. You told the person the garage is reserved. You need to tell the person they have to find other parking* The guy told the person where to find other parking.
My spiel: "I'm sorry, but the full sign is on because the garage is reserved, & the parking spots are limited to only people on the event list. I'm sorry but Testing services did not reserve parking spots for anyone, & every parking spot is already reserved & already paid for. I'm sorry, but I do not have any other parking spots for anyone else."
Then I am asked "so where do I park?" So I give the person alternative parking solutions, & since I can see the metered lot across the street, which had many open spots, & the lot on North Main Street beyond meter parking, which was wide open, from the booth window, I let the person know that those 2 lots have many open spaces.
Then I am asked to give directions, which I do.
Here is what I dealt with after giving my spiel & directions:
customer who said "so where do I park?" & asked for directions after hearing what I told her:
"I'm here to take a test"
me: "I'm sorry, but I cannot bend the rules for anyone"
"My test is at 8 a.m. *it is 7:30 a.m.*
me: "I'm sorry, but it's not my call to make"
She leaves
Another customer who said "so where do I park?" & asked for directions after hearing what I told her:
"Testing services did not tell me we had to bring money to park"
me: ....
*you knew you were taking a test, & you have to park somewhere. Since you have to park somewhere, you need money. Why is it Testing services responsibilty to remind you to bring money?*
