I just remembered this from way back when....
I used to work in a supermarket and one day I bought a few things after I'd finished my shift. I joined a queue whilst still wearing my uniform and when the lady in front of me went, I moved forward and put my purse on the counter while the cashier scanned my shopping and I packed my bags. Suddenly the guy in the queue behind me shouted, "She's forgotten her purse!". He grabbed my purse and RAN towards the door and the woman ahead of me who'd just left!
Now I can move fairly fast and I caught up with him at the door and just ripped it from his grasp, saying, "That's mine!" and I just walked back to the till. I exchanged a glance with the cashier and continued to pack my bags, whilst he started saying loudly to everyone in the vicinity that he thought it belonged to the other woman. When I asked him why he thought I had been queuing in front of him for a couple of minutes he said, "I thought you were going to help me pack my bags". I just laughed (as did others around me) and walked off.
He never complained to the manager, but equally he never apologised to me either.... I realise I wasn't exactly polite to him, but didn't feel that I had to be, given the circumstances.
Needless to say, I always hold on to my purse at all times now!!
