  • And the suck continues...

    Did you try asking permission?

So, just to be clear, if a vehicle is parked on private property, the police department will NOT tow it. If the vehicle is stolen however, we will. Otherwise, it’s on the property owner/manager to call a tow company. That being said…

SC: I parked my car at <grocery store> and then someone towed it!
(I ask for info to look up car and other blah blah)
Me: Ma’am, I show no record of a tow company reporting to us that they towed your vehicle. You should contact the <grocery store> and see if one of the managers there has a record of towing this vehicle.
SC: Well I just don’t understand. Can’t I park my car at the <grocery store> and leave it there? I mean, I thought that was legal!
Me: (in sympathetic voice) I don’t know what to tell you ma’am, did you ask the manager if he would mind if you parked your vehicle there?
    SC: Oh… No, I didn’t think of that…

Really? You’re not gonna ask if you can leave your crummy vehicle with it’s for sale sign on private property? You know what, this doesn’t deserve anymore comment. Lady, you’re dumb, so dumb I won’t even insult you properly.

I will note however, that the conversation I had with a co-worker about this call devolved into coming up with these two reality show titles: ‘Playing Risk with Retards’ and ‘Deer Hunting with Dick Cheney’. Yes we’re bad people. (By retards, we meant people who are stupid, not mentally handicapped. The word choice just seemed to have the best flow.)

And I had an easy week, this was the only real gripe I had. At least that was work related. Anyway, won't be in the office tomorrow, so here's my whopping post for the week.

Pur-mishun? What's that!?!?!? Why was she so confused about the idea that your car can get towed from private property? Somebody should park on her lawn for a few days and see if she minds.

A similar phenomenon occurs here; people often come in and ask if it was okay to park in <bank> parking lot where they have about ten signs that say "<bank> parking ONLY -- all others will be towed". (We're not <bank>.) So, um, the answer is...no. WHY would that be ok?

Yup, in the biz, they call this a private party impound, or PPI.

The tow company can legally SHAFT the car owner. Per diem storage is hefty, too, while you're jumping through the hoops needed to release it. Better have title and current registration and insurance!!

I've bought cars at auction that were unclaimed PPIs.

Whether the property owner is willing to be "nice" or not can be beside the point. Many municipalities and cities have ordinances against overnight parking, and they can and will pressure or fine noncompliant property owners.

Lastly, a lone car overnight is a tweeker-thief magnet! Expect a broken window, missing stereo, and sloppily rifled contents.
Suckiness is reinforced up OR down at every transaction. Accepting BS makes them worse for all of us; firm fairness trains them to suck less.
