  • It doesn't look like the picture.

This was a long time ago, but I remembered it today. A lady with two kids come in and they want ice cream. OH JOY. I hate doing ice cream. One of the kids wanted an oreo sundae or something along the lines. I made it and the kid said to his mother, "How come it doesn't look like the picture?" She gave me an awkward smile and I just rang her up. Ugh I felt sorta embarressed. Insulting the sundae I made like that. I know the kid is young, but does it matter how it looks? I care about how it tastes.

"sorry im not a food artist like the ones they hire for the advertisements"

theres a site somewhere that actually shows the difference of how advertisements make most food look 10x better than it does when someone makes it in "real life"

"Because the picture is not a picture of real food." They do weird things in order to make food pictures look good, and in the case of ice cream not to melt under the heat of the lighting.

yeah it's usually some sort of plastic
and then they use camera angles, lighting etc... hell in japan you can actually buy white cloth boxes (helps with the flash) just to put small stuff in to photograph it for sales.

        then there's photoshop...

Well at least tihs kid was young or so. I imagine his mother would tell him what kinds of tricks they usually use when you're not looking or listening. I've heard of some people asking TheTigress to make sandwiches look like the pictures and I'm sure the pictures have like double meat.

Don't forget that sometimes the ice cream pictures actually use shaving cream instead of Whipped Cream.

Actually, I'm fairly certain there's laws regarding the food used in advertising. I can't remember what they are, but it's something like, it still must contain edible products. So lard for ice cream is an okay substitute. Shaving cream for whipped would not be.

Yep theres a guy on Youtube who worked as a stylist for a food company and he said the legislation means they have to use the actual products the stores use

                however

he mentioned having to go through 100 packets of chips just to get a small handful to put on a plate for the advert because the company wanted only "perfect" chips.

Sadly, I know a 59 year old woman who threw a tantrum because her Waffle with whipped cream and berries was not set up like the picture, and she sent it back 3 times.

I believe there's a law that says they have to used the food the company uses, but what you don't see is that they take the hamburger patty, cut a slit in it, then spread the patty so it goes over the edge of the bun. They also move all the vegetables to the side that is being photographed. Same thing for sandwiches. Camera angles do most of the rest.

I think they can use lard or Crisco for photographing ice cream, because the ice cream would not hold up under the lights.

Also, it tends not to be fully cooked, so it's not as shrunken.
