  • I'm too tired to slap you, bash your face against my palm

    I had a winner today.

At the restaurant I work at, we sell all soft drinks (i.e. Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper) for 99 cents between 3 and 5 pm. Any size. Any soft drink. This does not include ice cream. At all.

A woman got a little testy with me concerning the exclusion of frosty treats from this offer.

SC: "I'd like to get 4 large chocolate shakes, please."
Me: *rings up order, recites price (around 6 dollars)*
SC: Isn't this your 99 cent drink special right now? It's only 3:20.
Me: Yes, yes it is. But that doesn't include ice cream, only soft drinks.
    SC: Aren't shakes soft?
Me: "Well, yes, shakes are soft, otherwise you wouldn't be able to imbibe them through a straw."
    SC: "See?!"
Me: You didn't let me finish. A "soft drink" is a drink that is carbonated. Like Coke, or Mt. Dew.
SC: "Well, that sign is misleading!"
Me: "Ma'am, have you ever heard of a drink that's physically hard?"
SC: "Are you being smart with me?"
Me: "I'm simply trying to do my job. Do you want me to make these shakes, or do you want to cancel out the order and make you some drinks that qualify for our little special?"
SC: ..."Just give me 4 large Cokes..."

I've never had any physically hard beverages. *chuckles*

However, I do not understand some peoples arguments for why they should have stuff. I'm waiting to hear a "But the beer can pops. So that make it a pop can right?"

Wouldn't a Popsicle qualify as such, albeit at a strech.

My understanding is that any drink with alcohol in it was a "hard" drink and that non-alcoholic drinks were "soft".... Am I wrong in that assumption?

              Edit via Wiki:

A soft drink is a beverage that does not contain alcohol. Carbonated soft drinks are commonly known as soda, soda pop, pop, coke or tonic in various parts of the United States, pop in Canada, fizzy drinks or soft drinks in the United Kingdom and Australia[1] and sometimes minerals in Ireland. The name "soft drink" specifies a lack of alcohol by way of contrast to the term "hard drink". The term "drink", while nominally neutral, sometimes carries connotations of alcoholic content. Beverages like colas, flavored water, sparkling water, iced tea, sweet tea, lemonade, squash, and fruit punch are among the most common types of soft drinks, while hot chocolate, hot tea, coffee, milk, tap water, juice and milkshakes do not fall into this classification. Many carbonated soft drinks are optionally available in versions sweetened with sugars or with non-caloric sweeteners.

It's amazing how obvious signs are "misleading" to people when they don't get their own way. To hell with being tired. A good slap across the face might have woken her up

That's the problem with the English language.

While most people know exactly what a "soft drink" is (as per the wiki definition posted), others take the simple black/white view of the world that one could from the first few sentences - that what is not a 'hard' drink, is a 'soft' drink, leading to this confusion.

The rest of us just get on with our lives and order whatever the heck we want, whatever it's called, and pay whatever it costs.
