  • No I won't give you money out of the register...

Not THAT sucky but it's been happening more and more! Does anybody else get people like this? If the total comes to an off amount like "20.57" (I'll use it as an example), I have had three or four people in the last week give me 20.50 and ask "Can I have seven cents?" Now personally, when I go to buy something, I kind of expect to have to pay for the whole amount, and not just the most convenient part of it. I will definitely round off if it's just a penny or two (and if the person is nice ) but I don't really get having my drawer come up short just so somebody doesn't have to break another quarter. Is the economy getting this bad, really?

It's all about people trying to pull a fast one & hoping the cashier is too stupid to notice.

On occasion. Usually it's just a cent or two and I will *sometimes* look the other way, if I'm in a good mood and the person is nice. Or if it's a little kid. Otherwise screw you. Don't whine about paying tax or being embarressed about asking your friend for change or how you couldn't possibly put anything back. You already know your options and I, a mere near-minimum wage peon working retail, am not about to pay for your crap or steal from the register. Yeah, I've noticed it more frequently, though. Especially around Christmas for some reason.

Yes, I also "round off" pennies on occasion. I usually carry some change with me in case a customer or two is a few pennies off... I'll just throw a quarter in the till at the end of the day.

Often a customer will leave his or her pennies and spare change. Sometimes I will use this to round out their final sales because it can be more convenient than having to break open another roll of pennies.

But every so often you do get customers who expect it.

Pennies I certainly understand rounding off. They aren't really worth the trouble. But I just got another person doing this! They wanted a little more than a dollar off of the total so they wouldn't have to break a ten. I kind of just stared at them until they handed over the full amount.

I would like a "take a penny leave a penny" tray, though... gotta talk to the boss about it

I once pulled a dollar out of my pocket for a customer.

              However-

Said customer was 8 or 10.
              He was crying.
He had had all the money, but lost a dollar in the store.
He spent 10 minutes looking for the money, only to politely come back to the register, still crying, to tell me that he wasn't getting the toy because he lost the dollar.

And this was before I realized that me no likey people:P

If they are nice and I am in a good mood and my till has not been off for the past few days I may round off a few pennies, but otherwise no. The most i have been asked to round off was $6 dollars.

Sometimes the MOD will tell us to let say 10 cents go. This usually occurs near closing on o holiday such as Easter, Christmas Eve, Memorial day or any day we close early. It's not worth the time to hang around the store over such a small amount any longer after the store closed but no one left.

I think it probably boils down to people nowadays expect other people to bend over backwards for them. They think they are entitled to being cut slack by everyone else.

You can probably thank all the "self esteem" building bullshit that goes on like it's gospel now.

Just to ruin the moment, lemme relate the tale of when I did something similar.

At my first theatre, kid wanted something from the ice cream area, but couldn't cover it. Was short a little over a buck. It was well in to my shift, so a number of people had left their change, plus I had a bit from what I'd bought on my supper break. So I covered the rest. Told the kid not to tell anyone, it was our secret. I hand over the ice cream, and he goes screaming over to his older brother, or someone like that, shouting the whole way "I didn't have to pay it all" or something like that. And the kid was probably 7 or 8, so he was old enough to understand the whole "keep it secret" since I told him why (everyone else would want it too). And lo and behold, one of the people from his group came over and wanted me to do it for them too.
