  • "Card Declined" SCs

    I've noticed that there's a trend among just about anyone who gets their card declined, here are a few of the common reactions I get.

    Me: Your card was declined.
    SC: *Gives me a WTF? kind of stare as if I'm somehow expected to fix the problem*

    ----------------------------------------------

    Me: Your card was declined.
    SC: That's impossible! I just put my money in my account this morning run it again!
    Me: Declined.
    SC: I'm telling you this card works! Run it again!
    Me: Declined. Ok sir I'm going to have to request another form of payment.

    ----------------------------------------------

    Me: Your card was declined.
    SC: WHAT?!! *random stream of cussing* I'm going to the bank, I'll be back.

    ------------------------------------------

    Me: Me: Your card was declined.
    SC: What? That can't be right this is a brand new card.
    Me: *shrug*
    SC: *proceeds to pull out her cellphone and call her bank while there is a line forming behind her*
    Me: Ma'am if you could please step to the side.
    SC: This will only take a moment...crap, I'm on hold...
    Me: Ma'am I have other customers waiting to check out.
    SC: Just hold on a minute! Yes I need to find out why my card isn't working! ...I'm on hold again.
    Manager: Ma'am please step aside until you ready to finish the transaction. If you do not I will ask you to leave the store entirely.
    *SC finally moves*

    -----------------------------------------

    Me: Your card was declined.
    SC: Dammit. Ok, let me go take care of this. Hold my stuff for me, I'll be right back.

    Of course the SC NEVER returns.

    Mine declined once.

    The bank had froze it because I had tried to use it at am ATM but kept using the wrong PIN number (I was using the one for my debit card... oops...). I just handed over my debit card and paid with that until I could get to a private place to call the bank.

      This was me, once. I actually was in the SCO and my card declined, so I ran across the parking lot and hit the ATM. It was really weird, I thought. Till I realized later I was using the wrong PIN at the store. Oops.

      Luckily, the guy at SCO that day was one of my regulars at Toxic Hell, and he held my stuff for me. I hate it when I'm stupid.

      Edit: Haha! I am not the only one! Thanks for making me feel better, EQ!

        Yeah people can be a little annoying when they get their card declined. I've seen it happen a lot. Here are some of the things I as a customer when my card doesn't work=
        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        Nice Worker Person= Your card is declined.
        Me= Oh must be the wrong one. *tries the card from my other bank*
        NWP= Accepted!
        ------------------------------------------
        NWP= oops looks like it didn't work? Did you want to try your other account?
        Me= Probably for the best. *tries savings instead of chequing*
        NWP= Accepted!
        ---------------------------------------
        Mean Worker Person= Declined.
        Me= Oops, must have used the wrong card/Oops must have been the wrong account. May I try again?
        MWP= No. Don't you understand what declined means?
        Me= *muttering as I scrounge for cash* I will not be an SC, I will not be an SC.
        Desk Worker=I pay tuition here, too. So I guess I pay myself.
          Oh yes, the people that ask "WHY WAS IT DECLINED?"
          As if I know, it tells me "declined", it doesn't tell me WHY.
            Ive had my debt card decline on two seperate occasions then
            charge me anyway.... the first time the timestamps were literally 15 seconds apart and I had a hell of a time trying to convince the manager the next day that I could not possibly have brought the same exact order two times in 15 seconds (I was buying a sandwhich and a drink for lunch)
            the second time happened on monday, milk purchase went through twice but only said accepted the second time.... Im paying cash from now on.
              I only got a decline once, and it was because the bank was holding my last payment for some reason, even though it had cleared my checking account 2 weeks earlier.
              That was the only explanation they could give me.
                I will admit, I do have a little bit of a panic when my card gets declined, as I tend to not carry around cash with me too much. I've never freaked out at the person though. I've now figured out that sometimes my card will decline because the chip is a bit grubby. All it takes is to just pop it out, give it a quick 'genie-lantern' rub and then it'll go through.
                  Heh. I have a card I used 2x/year. I could _never_ remember what the PIN was, and then what account I was supposed to use. I always did a little victory dance when I was accepted.
                  As for my other card, there've been times where *I'm* the one going "This might be declined, but I'd like to try it anyways."
                  Then there was the time I ran up against my bank's "We're gonna hold part of your cheque until it clears" policy, so that my account said I had $157 and my card was declining anyways. Confused the heck out of me. Got my friend to pay while I ran over to a nearby ATM to try and figure it out. >_<
                  Lastly, there was the time I just didn't have the cash in my account, but didn't realize it. I flat out said "What? Whoops. Thought I had the money in there. Sorry." I can't remember if I had a back-up form of payment then or not though.
                    I hate that. -.- Almost as much as I hate it when people bleat, "Try it again, try it again!" as if it's going to work magically the second time. I will only try it again once more, to stop the customer whining; not again.
                      I had fun with that. My bank canceled my check card becasue of the whole VISA security debacle, but didn't tell me about it until 2 weeks later. That was when I was finally able to on the phone long enough to get ahold of someone. Then I had to wait until I could get back into town and rePIN the new one.
                      Interestingly, the other bank didn't cancel that one, which meant I didn't have to break out the checkbook.
                          Sadly on our systems I think it does occasionally fix it if I "try again", I usually won't try more than twice however.
                            I remember the last time I got my debit card renewed, my old one was still active (I had activated the new one, but hasn't used it yet, wanting to make sure it was fine before I cut the old one). Tried the new one, declined. Okay, I figured the activation hadn't kicked in yet, since I'd only done it the night before. So I tried the old one, declined.
                            Of course I was like "WTF" cause I always have plenty in my checking account and well, I'm not exactly poor in the savings department, and I have overdraft protection to boot. Of course I was tweaking.
                            I had my dad look into it, as it's a credit union with his employer, and it turned out there was a bank computer crash or something that morning for about an hour, and during that time is when I tried to use it, and it was declined by default since the store couldn't contact the bank. Talk about a weird coincidence though!
                            Usually if a customers card declines, I let them try it again (rarely a 3rd, usually when the register is being a tard that day anyway). Sometimes an initial decline really IS a fault, or they're trying to get cash back and ask for more than the account can give the first time, and lower it the 2nd.
                              Oh yes... Never mind there's an ATM about 20 metres outside of our store, the number of times I've been told "I'll just run to the ATM, I'll be right back!!! Just keep my stuff here PLEEEEEEEEEASE?!"... and then 5 hours later at closing it all has to go back on the shelf.
                              I guess if you were going to the bank there could be distractions on the way there or back, but the ATM is in view of the store! O.O
                              As for me, I've had my card decline once ever =) I went to pay my mechanic for work on my poor busted up car and didn't realise that the bank had a maximum withdrawal per day on my account, which the cost of repairs alone exceeded... One phone call to the bank later (no other customers waiting though :P) and he had his money!
