  • I couldn't believe the selfishness..

I work in a hospital, and am often pushing a trolley around, so I need to get the lift rather than the stairs. At one end of the hospital we have 4 lifts (elevators!)and 2 of these are staff only (or porters/staff transporting patients) so there are very rarely problems there. The other end only has 2 lifts and these are for patients/visitors and staff. If I am waiting for a lift, I will always always let staff pushing a patient in a bed go first (there isn't enough room in the lifts for more than a bed, really), even I was waiting well before them. Getting a sick patient in a bed to a ward is far more important than what I need to do!

The other day I arrived at the lifts, and already waiting were a couple of chavvy women with kids and pushchairs, and 2 members of staff with an elderly patient in a bed. I don't know which of them was there first, I assumed the staff+bed as they were closer to the lift door. When the lift arrived, the staff had to move the bed back out the way as there was some nurses with a bed already in the lift trying to get out at that floor. As it did so, one of the women with her pushchair pushed past them into the lift, and as the nurse started to protest, the women shouted "Oi, I was 'ere first! and 'er! (pointing to her friend) She was with me! Move the f*** out the way!" As the nurse started to say "Could you would let us on first..this gentleman has got to get up to surgery.." The woman in the lift shouted "Ah, F*** OFF! and off goes the lift!

It made me sooooo for the rest of the day..what is wrong with people..

So much for the signs seen at every hospital up and down the land...

This is tolerated in Merry Ole England?

We don't have those signs where I'm living here in the USA...

It's only tolerated by a vocal minority, but it is around I'm afraid to say.

Yer, there are signs like that in every single entrance to <Local Hospital> and at <Hospital in next town>, they're big A2 signs as well...

The sad thing is, being told to "f*** off" is probably nothing compared to some of the abuse nurses recieve...

Indeed it's not, a friend of mine works in theaters (OR) and he gets abuse, I've never found the logic in attempting to assault a person who has sufficient stocks of sedatives to kill an elephant.

Hence one of the reasons I make sure I stick my head into ED on a Friday/Saturday night when I can.

They'll find out how funny that is when Karma decides to let them be the one in the hospital bed, possibly needing urgent or emergency surgery.

Nursing staff does take a lot of abuse, as I'm quickly learning, but somehow it doesn't bother me nearly to the extent as it did when I was taking it from customers. I can understand why someone in a nursing home or hospital would be grumpy, I probably wouldn't want to be in their place, either, y'know?

I hope she receives the same "courtesy" from some other SC if SHE's even in a stretcher needing to be wheeled to surgery.

I used to be a guerney-pusher in a hospital, and had to deal with that nonsense, too. What was worse was that elevators that were clearly marked Staff And Patients Only were frequently used by visitors who were peeved when we would ask them to go use the visitor elevators as we needed to get this sick bedridden patient down to radiology and there's no room for both them and the patient.

                    RTFS, people!!!

Our local hospital has a key they can use to over ride the elevator. If they need to get someone somewhere quick they use the key and the nearest elevator comes right to them and they have total control.

Too bad yours dont work like that, you could have waited until it got up a few floors and brought them right back down. lol

That almost happened when my son was being transported from the cath lab to the PICU. It was in 2001 and we were in the middle of what turned out to be a ten week hospitalization.

So they had his bed, multiple poles with medication pumps going to various lines, IV poles, oxygen, chest tubes with the collection box thing, monitors and stuff I've probably forgotten about. We were walking with the team to keep Kyle from being frightened (he was only 3 at the time). Then there was the doctor, Mr. Dips and me, two nurses and two techs who were monitoring, helping with the transport.

The only elevator bank was in a public area. Needless to say EVERYONE backed away and let us through to the elevator.

When it came it was full, so the doctor asked the folks on board to get off and take the next one. One look at what is was needed for and everyone did it, except this one lady.

She just backed herself into a corner and tried to wave us on.

The doctor very politely asked to to get off the elevator.

She again indicated that we get on with her. After reading the above, it was blindingly obvious to anybody with half a brain that there was NO ROOM. Not to mention the exposure to unknown diseases factor.

The doctor told her she NEEDED to get off, not so politely this time.

She said she was late for an appointment and refused to budge.

The doctor told her that she didn't have a choice. It was an emergency. This patient had priority. She had to get off the elevator NOW or she would be removed by security. I guess another person had already called them because they had just shown up. And they looked pretty pissed.

After a brief moment of pretending she didn't understand English, she must have seen the guards. Or maybe the hate beams from the entire circle of onlookers penetrated her sense of entitlement, because she finally got off the elevator and we were on our way.

The whole episode only took a minute or or two, but it really shook me. What kind of person thinks like that?

I'd always hoped that an incident like that one would be rare. It makes me sad to see that it's not.

Dips, I'm sorry you had to deal with that self-centered, stupid hag. I hope she got what was coming to her, and a severe butt-chewing from the security team and the other bystanders.
