  • Grocery Crazies, or my first post

Been lurking for awhile but didn't have a customer who made me feel the need to share my woe with the rest of the world...then I started working at a grocery store.

Now work hasn't been too bad. Most people are awesome. These two were not. Both incidents sorta involve WIC but it's not the WIC customers who were the problem. In fact they were two of the sweetest people I've rang up. The people behind them, not so much.

    The Sighing Lady
I am ringing up a nice woman who happened to have 3 WIC orders. No big deal. Doesn't take me too long. The whole thing took under 5 minutes. I'm being nice to the customer I'm serving but I can't help but hear all this sighing from behind her. The sighing woman was in my full service line with about 4 items when we had an express open.

Well finally I finish with the nice WIC lady and wish her a nice day and start on the sighing lady's order. She stands there and STARES at me as I ring everything up and bag it. THEN and only then does she take out her checkbook and slowly writes her check. It took longer to deal with her than all 3 of the WIC orders ahead of her. GAH!

    Just Plain Awful
This happened a few days ago and I'm still angry at this woman.

Once again doing a WIC order. This time for the sweetest Muslim woman. (I only mention her religion cause it's unfortunately important to the story) The only reason I knew she was Muslim was because of how she was dressed. The woman behind her seemed normal. Boy was I wrong. The sweet lady leaves and new lady comes up. This is verbatim what was said.

SC: Boy I wish I could move to a new country and get free money.
    Me:
SC: This is why we have the swine flu (yes she actually said this)
    Me:
SC: Oh I'm sorry. It just makes me angry sometimes. You know?
Me: quietly finish ringing her up and bagging not looking her in the eye

And there is the beginning of my new customer headache. I might even keep sharing them if I remember.

One thing I could never understand in the 6 years I've worked in customer service is how the ones that hem and haw so much to get the person/people in front of them to hurry up but when they come up they take their sweet ass time. That second SC...wow, that's a serious brain to mouth filter malfunction. Welcome to CS.com!

Nice to see another grocery store worker. Your stories just make me glad, once again, that I'm not a cashier. I can handle the tiny bit of time it takes to show someone where the eggs are, but don't expect me to be nice for an entire shift on the registers. (For the record, I'm the one who gets blamed because the prices keep going up-ie scan clerk.)

Anyways, I'm sure the others will be along with cookies, brain-bleach, drinks, and the other important stuff.

My replies (That'd I'd give if I were the customer behind the SC)

SC: Boy I wish I could move to a new country and get free money.
Having to put up with bitches like you though would make it so not worth it.

SC: Oh I'm sorry. It just makes me angry sometimes. You know?
Yeah, just like being a bigot makes me angry.

Of ALL the things to try and blame Muslims for that takes the cake. Though a racist nut like that probably holds them responsible for alcohol misuse and young girls dressing too provacatively.

I should find it comforting that the ignorant so openily show themselves to be ignorant.

You know, I'm starting to wonder what would happen if, when people made comments like this, all the cashiers stopped and just looked at them in abject horror and disgust.

I mean, can you really get in trouble with management for an "uncontrollable" emotional response?

i dunno.. i have seen stories where people complain about the look on a cashier's face before...

and i've had a supervisor yell at me for tilting my head at him. (cos i was doing the confused-dog look... meaning "are you out of your mind?") lol

That actually happened quite frequently when I was waiting tables. Thankfully not to me but it seemed like if you didn't have a near psychotic smile plastered on your face at all times people thought you were rude. We were lucky to have most of management back us up.

I'll probably post stories from my restaurant days at some point. It's nice having somewhere to dump these stories from my brain.

As a 19 year veteran of the grocery stores, one thing I've learned is that people will say the damndest things imaginable . . .

Don't ever think or say to yourself that you've heard it all . . . 'cause just as soon as you do, some blazing moron comes along that will prove you wrong.

BTW, welcome aboard to CS. You'll find several more grocery store people around here too.

                              welcome.

i also want to give a healthy pop headside to people who pull that passive aggressive bs with comments/sounds then take their sweet time.

as for woman number two, brain to mouth filter failure, yes, but there's a whole lot of stupid mixed in there too.

                              just wow.
                              look! it's ghengis khan!
Sorry, but while I can do many things, extracting heads from anuses isn't one of them. (so sayeth the irv)
