  • When shopping for your Mother....

And you stop in the bath store, and the nice girl asks you what kind of smells your mother likes, Do not say any of the following

    "Ummm what do you like?"

    "I dunno"

    "Stuff"

    "what does your mother like?"

Also, its fine when I ask a five year old if his mommy smells more like flowers or cookies, but when I have to resort to asking a 35 year old man that, I wonder just how unobservant some guys can be. Franky I wonder if that man would have noticed a moose on his bed.

      No, I think he would.

Yep. I can understand the poor guy completely. My father had to look at the bottle to know whatever it was my mom was wearing. I had to do the same thing - and now I have to do it with my wife as well. If you asked me what smell my wife likes, I would only be able to state what was on the bottle label. I have no idea what Fresh Cotton really smells like, but I know that is what she last bought at Bath and Body Works.

If the guy had any brains, he would look at whatever it was his mom has in her bathroom or on her dresser. Walking into a store completely unaware is just going to lead to disaster no matter what he picks out.

you can almost never go wrong offering Chanel #5. Serious classic scent for women. Emeraude is good, but there is a fraction in it that is very body chemistry dependent, and either it smells fantastic on you or you reek like you havent bathed in about a week =( I love the way it smells on my mom, but I smell like I am a homeless person with no access to basic hygene=(

Likewise, I'm sorry, but I do not know what your mother would like to read.

My mother and youngest aunt (twins) both love Chanel #5. It smells like cheap dime-store perfume on me. Cheap dime-store perfume, on the other hand, usually smells pretty good on me. Go figure.

Last year, I sent fruit for Mother's Day. She wouldn't mind flowers or toilet water, but she really appreciates practical gifts, too.

My brother and I were supposed to take my mom out for dinner today. My dad's been sick all week and she woke up with a sore throat yesterday so she felt we should cancel in case she got worse (which she would have been if she had followed his course). So I cancelled the reservation. She still has a sore throat but she felt OK to go out yesterday and pick up a prescription for my dad, and she went to church this morning. I came over to surprise her and bring her her card and a box of chocolates (which was my Mother's day present from work) and I decided to risk my health () and do my laundry. So my mom ended up making me dinner on Mother's Day.

My Mom doesn't like either one.

Her favorite perfumes are Mackie and AV (by Adrienne Vittandi.) And both of those I have a hard time finding at department stores around here, so I order those online.

My theory is women can pick cologne for men because they just have the nose for it, but for men, it's just not their forte. I just thank my lucky stars no one has ever attempted to buy me perfume. I wouldn't like it. Gift cards, I like gift cards, especially if they are for a book store. And shinies. If you won't get me either, just get me a card. Not that anyone here actually cares.

this is all true, but the thing that really sorta got me was the unwillingness of some of these men to smell the things that they were buying to see if they at least liked them.

Honestly, I can't tell one perfume apart from another.

They just all smell the same to me, and none of em smell good =\

This thread reminds me of a perfume return I did once. A young man was returning a bottle of Elizabeth Arden's White Diamonds.

He just told me straight off to never buy this for my mother. His mother was insulted. Apparently White Diamonds is an "old lady" perfume. He ended up exchanging it for a gift card, which is what she wanted anyway. XD He said he bought the perfume because it was the prettiest bottle or something like that.

If you don't know what mom wears, then don't buy her perfume.
