Joseph Hooker, who was a General for the Union Army during the Civil War
Hey, I was just coming to post that I used to work for one of his decendants!

While I was in outpatient rehab for my stroke, I eventually got to walking well enough that I didn't need a four foot cane... and consequently found my cane falling over everywhere I leaned it, until one of the assistant therapists found me a little spring device, similar to a clothespin in execution, to wrap around the handle which would hold it upright. She then proceeded to tell me she found it by going to Google and searching for 'hookers'. And that I then went bright red.

in fact "hookers" are named after him!
He had ladies who followed the troops to service them if I remember my history correctly... so they ended up calling them Hooker's ladies or something like that... and then they just were called hookers
you know, google image does not seem to have any elderly or old hooker pictures... in fact the pictures I got were much more graphic than I thought they would be, serves me right I suppose
so much for me wanting to be a smart arse like the rest of you

from what i understand no one is really sure if this is true.
the all-knowing wikipedia article has a paragraph or two at the very bottom about it. best evidence it wasn't because of him: the word was seen used in 1845, before Gen Hooker was anybody
To err is human, to blame someone else shows good management skills.
Yup, the word didn't start with the army man at all. But it's a good chance that it gained popularity by it's connection.
I'm such a lexiphile.

My mom used to come in second or win the speed crochet contests at the county fair. She'd get a button proclaiming her "fastest hooker in the west."
