  • Failure with a capitol P

So at about 12:30 tonight, this guy comes in to get a room. It's our last non-smoking room and it's a suite, so of course it's going to be a little bit more. However, I was able to bring it down to about $99.

SC: This is the price? I'm paying a hundred bucks for a hotel room?
Me: Yes. It's our last non-smoking room and it's also a suite.
SC: Forget it then. I'm not getting the room. He bolts out of the hotel and peels out of the parking lot.

I proceed to check him out of the computer and mark the room as clean in my computer and shred the guest's CC imprint when I notice something out of place. There was no imprint. Which means I had his CC ready in order to make an imprint. The dumbass was so obsessed about not paying for a $100 room that he left his CC! At the time of this writing, it's been about 50 mintues.

All I have to say is that he's lucky I'm an honest person. If he does this again at another hotel, he may not be so lucky.

This reminds me of a time a few years back when i was Voluntold by my command to help with a fair thingie for kids(Pr to the community). After the event was over i was jogging back to base (about a mile and a half away) and saw a credit card on the road. I retrieved it during a lull in traffic and get back to my barracks room. I first spent an 30 minutes trying to find the person using 411 and the white pages. After this was unsuccessful i called the number on the back to report lost/stolen cards. they asked for my contact info, which i gave.
About a week later i get a call from a number a couple of states away. I answered, and it was the cutest sounding old lady on the other end thanking me profusely for doing the right thing and yadda yadda.
But yeah. if i wasn't an honest person, she could have really been boned. i realize that your guy is a jackass, so the situations aren't exactly similar... i was just reminded of this.

5.5 hours by the end of my shift, he still had not come back for it. I'm not sure if he came for it during another shift, but I'll find out tonight when I go back in if he picked it up.

No he won't. He'll report it stolen and try to get the OP arrested for theft.

Oh I hope not! I have my hotel's cameras on my side. I tucked the card away paper clipped to a registration card that he never filled out and kept it on the counter out of customer view, but still in plain sight of the camera. Furthermore, there won't be any charges on it except for the pre-auth I did when he checked in not long before checking out.

Side note: I ended up selling that room later that night for a higher price.

You would be amazed how many people leave their cards in the stupidest of places and never come back for them. Drive through places usually get quite the collection. We had a rotating total of 10-12 in our safe at a time. We'd hold them for a couple of weeks, then cut them up and throw them out. I am continually boggled at how cavalier people are with their money.

I'd like to point out that I said "try" to pin you for theft. I never said he'd succeed.

Actually, here's the good news on that! He can't charge the OP with theft, as the credit card is not his possession. It belongs to the financial institution that issued it, who won't give a toss about it as long as there've been no charges. Particularly if the OP reports that it's been found.

Yeah we have about a dozen cards of several types at any given time including Debit, Credit, and EBT (WIC and FS) cards. Plus SS, DL, ID, etc. Even a passport I think. And they never come looking for them. It's quite amazing how much people don't watch out for their things.

Yep, that's the reason that when an ATM retains your card, you can't claim that it was stolen.

When you get back in, if he hasn't reclaimed it, call the number on the back and report it left behind. Keep yourself on the moral high ground.

I once left mine behind in the pharmacy. As soon as I noticed it missing, we retraced our steps back to the last store we thought we'd used it - which was there. Thankfully it was in their lost-and-found drawer!

But yeah, I get sooo fussy about where it is.

                        3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.

Remember when guys carried their wallets and credit cards and keys and cell phones in their pockets?

I see more and more guys (and it's usually guys) just carrying this stuff in their hands, and just dumping it on the counter, bar, whatever when they're out and about, while they organize their purchases.

About once a week or so one of these guys, after paying for their stuff and walking out the door, will leave one or more of these items behind, and we'll have to get on the Voice of God speakers and tell them, "SIR! You left your (pick one) cell phone/wallet/credit cards/cash/all-of-the-above! SIR!" Sometimes they're so wrapped up in they're own little worlds that we have to send somebody chasing after them.

Seriously, "don't watch out for their things?" How much childlike trust that the world WILL look out for you and take care of you do you have to have to just dump a $500 I-Phone on the counter of a convenience store and walk away from it?

The bosslady's daughter did just that and when she went back in, it was gone.

She's careless like that, which is why I don't really want her to help me with he work that I do.

I now work for a very large bank. THANK YOU to everyone that calls in on a card they've found.

I LOVE when I actually get the cardholder on the phone and get to tell them where they left it. The guy that left it at the strip club was my favorite!
