  • Receipt? Keep it

So I get a call about a customer wanting to exchange a game for the same product but he doesn't have a receipt and he claims the product is defective. It's 15 dollars so that's sort of a sign that the game has been out for awhile usually. Plus I can't think of any 15 dollar Wii games we currently have. Without a receipt, you could have had the game for a year before it stopped working.

So he comes back and asks about the return policy while getting something out of the case. I tell him several times that he needs to keep the receipt and then yes, he can return it. He complains about something about how we changed our policies, and I tell him again to keep the receipt and there won't be an issue. He decides he doesn't want what was in the lock box.

hahaha! Yep! We get those too. They always claim the policy just changed before we tell them 'um....sorry its been that way for somewhere around four years. where have you been?'

I wonder why it's so hard for him to hold on to a receipt? I keep all my important ones in a neat little box.

Has there ever been a store that does not have some variation on "keep the damn receipt" somewhere in their return policy?

I had a guy once return a book, in mint condition, still in print, no problemo...but his receipt (also in perfect condition as it had been inside the book) was five years old. We had a little laugh, and he cheerfully took a store credit and went shopping.

when i buy a cd or dvd, i peel the case apart and put the signed reciept inside, hidden by the case and back label. Why yes, I did once have issues with an ex roomie claiming some cds were hers....

Book reciepts get tucked into the book unless it is a hardback, which then gets a bookplate. I put the signed reciept in behind the bookplate.

Appliances or stuff in boxes, the reciept ge3ts tucked into the box, and the box goes in the attic in case we need to return/send it in for repairs.

Major appliance reciepts get put in the palstic bag with the manuals and other paperwork.

My parents put pretty much everything on their Discover card. They keep a binder in the closet and all receipts go into it, along with all the statements. There's also a binder for any warranty paperwork and instruction manuals. So if they ever need any of it, they know exactly where to look.

A.D., that's an interesting way of doing it, though I'd probably lose the most important ones anyway.

I have to put everything in a file cabinet, otherwise it gets lost.

i don't always save receipts for big items
only one i can think of right now is that my boyfriend told me that if i ever need stuff done for my camera i should have the receipt before canon does any work on it... and they don't even care if it's the right receipt either, as long as it's for a canon camera.

so i made a point of putting the receipt in my camera bag and it stays there always

but that's the only one i keep forever

Hm I think I'm gonna borrow from y'all's receipt filing styles. I like them. My current one is a little disorganized.

I haven't really done it much in more recent years, but in the past with items such as a TV, stereo, lawn mower, power tools, basically anything with a warranty, was to staple the receipt to the Instruction Manual, then file the Manual away.

As I currently work as a warranty manager, I have lost track of the number of times I have refused warranty repairs/returns because customers do not have a receipt.

Company policy is: No proof of purchase, No free repair. My favourite is the customer who tells me they spoke to "the other girl in your dept" and she said it was ok. When I point out that I am the only person in my dept and there is no way they spoke to someone else, they tend to go all meek and hang up.

I have to admit, I am terrible at keeping reciepts (even working in warranty) what I do keep just get tossed into a big old shoe box in case I ever need them
"When did you get a gold plated toilet?"
"We don't have a gold plated toilet"
"Oh dear, I think I just peed in your Tuba"

Me too. I'm awful about it. But the difference between me and an SC is that if I need to return something and can't find the receipt, I don't blame anyone but myself.

Sure, I'll sometimes try an exchange or a store credit, but if I get shot down...the person to blame is staring back at me in the the mirror, not some poor clerk.
