Are you open?
I'm sure that many other people have similar experiences but it still amazes me how many times this question is asked.
I work at a full-serve gas station in a very large city. Every morning at around 5am I do the usual preperations before opening the station. Checking how much gas we have, balancing the shifts and inventory from the previous day, cleaning up, and so on. But while I do this people insist on driving in and lining up in front of the pumps. Even though all the lights (except for those in the store) are turned off, there is no price for the gas displayed yet, there is a huge "Sorry, we're closed" sign, and I'm standing outside over the underground tanks taking the dips, they still decide to sit there for 10 minutes waiting for me to come over. Though most people are understanding when we tell them that we're still closed; they either wait or just come back later.
And while I'm getting ready to open up inside I lock the door so that customers don't wander in. But the odd few still decide to try to pull the door as hard as they can, then when they fail they resort to hitting their fist on the glass to get my attention while the "We're closed" sign is in front of their face the whole time.
And of course when we do finally open, the early morning (usually elderly) wanderers come in to sit and read the newspaper (without paying I should add) and tell me their life story for 15 minutes (but that's another story).
I don't control the prices!!!
We all know that the price of gas has increased and none of us are happy about it, but it's no excuse to take out the anger on me.
While I'm changing the price for gas on the large signs people seem to like driving up to me and screaming about how I'm a cheapskate and trying to rip them off. It's usualy something like: "Oh you're raising the price up are you? Why don't you add another 50cents huh? Or even better, add another dollar! (and a few other less sarcastic things I'd rather not repeat)". And some even decide to share their coffee with the front of my shirt!
These people need to understand that I have absolutely NO control over the price of gas. We're told in the morning what to set the price at and that's it. I pay the same price for the gas as everyone else. What's worse is we barely make any money from the gas itself, most of the money goes to the company, where we make profit is with the merchandise inside the store. But when people don't fill up their car as much and are being more conservative with their money we lose a lot of business.
No, you can't pay me back later (you scammer).
Now this one frustrates me the most. People are always rushing to get gas before work or during their breaks, so it's understandable that someone would forget their wallet or not have enough cash on them. Sadly we get a lot of people who try to pull one over us by saying that they'll pay us back in a few minutes after they drive to the bank, but never show up. So now we have a standard procedure where the customer gives us an item of equal or greater value to how much they owe us as a form of insurance. Here's an example of this procedure thwarting another scammer:
Me: Well this one's obvious.
LB: Lying B****
A little background info first. This woman asked for $50 worth of gas. Remember that, $50. but she tried to save some money by saying (after I put in the gas) that she actually asked for $15, not $50. Now this doesn't always mean that the person is lying. I explained to her that I repeated to her the amount ($50) after she told me to confirm it. This is what took place:
Me: I'm sorry but it doesn't matter wht you said, the fact is that you have $50 worth of gas in your tank that you will have to pay for.
LB:But I don't have that much money. I only have $13 with me (even though she stated that she actually asked for $15).
Me: Unfortunately I can't let you leave without paying. I will only let you leave if you give me something that is of an equal or greter value of the money owed.
LB: But I don't have anything with me.
Me: You have your car, I'll be more than happy to hold it here until you pay me back.
LB: What! No way! I'm not leaving my car here!
Me: Well ma'am, it seems you have 2 options, leave your car here and pay me back later. Or you can try leaving without paying but then I'll leave it to the police to retrieve the money from you after you've been arrested for theft.
LB: Ugh, fine. *opens up her wallet to reveal MULTIPLE $50 bills and hands me one of them*
It makes me sad to lose trust in people day by day. It make the world a more depressing place.
Well if you've read this far thanks for reading my first post. As there are many SC that I get daily, there will (unfortunately) be many more where this came from.
