  • Yes, quarters can be confusing

So, this is more of a question that comes with a little story. So, for those of you in the US, have you ever had a customer get confused by a state quarter? You know how each state has its own design, right? So I have almost three customers a day (I should add that they are Americans, not visitors) who get confused when counting out change.

So here were my three people today:

SC: in this case stands for stupid customers -_-

SC #1: What are you doing? I don't have no g**d*** use for no g**d*** euros (pronounces yoo-rows). This is America.
Me: Sir, your change is $.53. Those are two quarters and three pennies.
SC: What, get me your manager. You better open that register again and give me some real money.
Me: Sir, turn the quarter over...
SC: Oh (leaves like nothing happened)

SC # 2: (She owes me $.75. There're quarters right in her hand! but she keeps passing over them.)
    Me: Oh, there're some quarters.
SC: No, no, no dear. Those aren't quarters. No, I must have been outside of the country recently. (You're not sure...?)
Me: Where'd you go? (I'm tapping my fingers on the counter impatiently, my eyes are glued to the quarters.)
SC: I don't really remember, hon. (How can you not remember! Swishes coins around, the quarters flip over.)
SC: Here we are deary. Have a nice day.

SC # 3: What the... Mexican f***ers. I just came from taco bell and look at what they gave me!
Me: Quarters? (SC leaves. What an asshole. I feel sorry for the taco bell guys who had to put up with him.)

So, anyone else ever have this problem?

I only have problems with dollar coins. People seem to hate them. As for quarters, I get the people who need a specific state/marking and want me to sift through my till for a certain coin. Methinks not.
A lion however, will only devour your corpse, whereas an SC is not sated until they have destroyed your soul. (Quote per infinitemonkies)

I have never, ever, had a person silly enough to not recognize an American quarter. Where were they when everyone was making a big deal about the new designs? It only lasted a few years... P.S. Taco Bell is about as Mexican as McDonalds

I get these people, however. If I have the time, I'll do it, but if there's a line of customers behind you, why even bother asking?

My deal is Canadian coinage, since their pennies, dimes nickels and quarters look just like ours. When asked by a colleague who thought I was uber-smart for being able to tell the difference, I pointed out, "We don't print the Queen on our money."

I recently paid for a purchase with about 7 of the gold sacajawea dollars and change. I handed the cashier the money and she took it, then waited, then looked at me and said "Your total was $7.43." And I told her yes, I know, those are dollar coins. She looked back at them, then at me like she really wasn't buying it, then looked for another employee. She showed the employee the coins, they nodded, and she shrugged and accepted them. But jeeze, the whole time she acted like I was trying to pull a fast one on her!

Personally, I love dollar coins. Loved them when I visited Canada, wish they were more common in the US, and that vending machines took them.

I also love the state quarters, because I think it's a cool way for each state to show off its personality a little bit. I like that.

But to not know that they are American coins??? freaking morons!!

Ok, I could understand mixing up a franc and a quarter: I got a franc as change the other day, and it really looked like a quarter until I pulled it out and looked at it by itself.

well, some people might try to pass off other coins as american dollar coins, which aren't that common where I'm from...at least, not that i'm aware of...I hardly ever see them or hear them talked about...

We get New Zealand 10c and 20c pieces. Technically, they're not legal tender in Australia, but we still accept them anyway...but from time to time we get other foreign coins. I've had a United Arab Emirates coin, as well as a British pound coin and even a Euro coin in there. Technically, we're not meant to accept them, but they look and feel like Aussie 5c or 10c coins, so we don't know until we've accepted it.

                (Australian money for the record has 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins, with $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes. WE used to have a $1 note, but that's since disappeared.)

I personally love those gold dollar coins. I am saving those, whenever I get them. Right now I have about $7.00. I also save the regular older dollar coins also. Not sure how much I have saved in those.

I like the idea of having dollar coins -- I would have no problem if we dumped both $1 bills and pennies (the latter actually costs more than 1c to make, last time I checked ...). My issue with the $1 coins here in the US has always been that the old ones (Susan B Anthony coins) looked waaaaaay too much like quarters. They finally had the opportunity to change them by totally redesigning the damn things, so what do they do? They come out with ANOTHER design that looks almost but not entirely quite unlike a quarter! Morons >_<

one us penny cost 1.5¢ to make.

i'm all for no pennies and no dollar bills. it'd save the gov't a lot of money, especially in this economy

plus i always hate it when vending machines won't take my $1 bill

I've never had anyone with an issue figuring out American state Quaters...I do confused by the new nickel design...at first glance I always think they're the new quarters but then I quickly figure it out..stoopid nickels.. At least I know it's american money!
