  • I got to call the cops twice today

First call: Not really a call, the cop was already there

My CW is from a not so nice part of Baltimore city. Her second job is the night shift at a convenience store near the projects, she's been robbed before. I have not. So we're both on register, it's the middle of the day (who the f*** robs a fabric store in the middle of the suburbs in the the middle of the day?) and this guy comes up to me and demands money. I never thought it would happen. He had his hand in his pocket like he had a gun. My CW pushes me out of the way and takes over. At that point she's my hero, but it gets better.

CW: Hey Monica, get this (calls to our manager on the speaker system), some skinny ass little white boy is trying to rob us. Call the cops. (the entire store hears this)
SC: Are you nuts lady, give me the money!
CW: Boy, there ain't no gun in your pocket, go home before I whoop yo' ass. (She's usually very proper, it was hilarious, though I was still scared sh*tless.)
SC: (walks out and is picked up by the cop that was sitting in the parking lot right outside...he had been there when the kid walked in)

2nd call: Not technically customers...but still weird.

I went into work at 2, I was working till 11, probably later (there's a big sale today and I had to put up the signs and crap) When I walked in I noticed a man and woman fighting in the parking lot. Whatever, not my problem. So it's 7 and I had to fill the bush tree (it's a fake flower display). It's right by the window, I look outside and the man and woman from before are standing outside their car. At 8 I start recovery. I like to keep to a schedule, so I knew the time. There they were. At this point I noticed something weird, the people hadn't moved since I last saw them:
The man was on the passengers side, his arms crossed on the roof of the car, his head resting in his arms. The woman was on the drivers side, the door was open (so they weren't locked out of their car) her right knee was bent and resting on the drivers seat, her left leg was standing outside the car, her right elbow was resting on the door, her left hand was on her hip. They literally had not moved.
I thought maybe they were out of gas, but there's a gas station in our parking lot. So I decided they must be picking someone up, but the gym next door was closed on sunday and they weren't really close to the pizza hut on the other side. I ignored them. 9 comes and we close the store, I clean all the windows. Still haven't moved. I sweep and vacuum. Still haven't moved. I finish recovery. Still haven't moved. I take out the trash. Yup, still haven't moved. I asked the other girl with me if they were picking her up. No, they weren't. I put out signs, clean up the fabric, organize the ribbon. Finally it's 11:30, every other store is closed, I call the cops because we're two women alone at night in a store that had been robbed earlier in the day. He promptly shows up, escorts us out and I don't know what happened after that. Will find out tomorrow.

On the first one, yeah not sure what kind of brain power it takes to try and rob a fabric store at midday. Very low wattage I'm sure.
On the second one, keep us posted. That's just weird.

Oh, definitely give us any update you get on that couple at the car.

Oh, a big thing I forgot to mention about the second one. Around 10 it started pouring. I mean a thunder and lighting there's going to be branches all over my driveway storm. And still these people did not move. They must have been soaked. And the driver's door was open, so her seat must have been wet too. I mean, what kind of people would stand outside their car in the rain when they could sit inside their car in the rain. That's when I called.

Sounds like they are dead tbh or you're halucinating or they just playing a really really elaborate prank on you.

I would think maybe performance art where the people were replaced by manequins at some point, to see how long it would take for someone to actually check on them.

But I do wonder why nobody thought of maybe checking them out more closely sometime a bit sooner...

Thats what I was thinking. See thats one of the reasons why I don't like the whole 'It's not my problem' attitude so many have now. If a college was using that to test people's compassion for another I think everyone who passed them failed miserably.

I think I would have just wondered over with the guise of offering car help if their car was dead or something. With cell phone out to call a tow truck. (Got one in my names section.)

That's got my vote. I was actually in a club in college that did things like that for fun. Though, those mannequins must have been expensive if they were made up to look exactly like them.

They were only one row back, I could clearly see that they were not mannequins, though that's a good theory for those of you thinking that

My manager went and checked on them when I asked if anyone was being picked up. They just told her to f off and mind her own business. I personally wouldn't have checked. Maybe if they looked distressed, but they didn't. They just looked like whack jobs standing in an empty parking lot at night. And like I said, there was a gas station just across the parking lot, a 40 second walk so any car trouble could have been handled there. Also, they had been there since 7 and were more than welcome to come in and ask for help. There's a target across the street, a pizza hut next door, a bar to the right, 5 restaurants in the parking lot, plenty of places for them to go to get out of the rain. I'm a cheery person always ready to help, but I'm not going to put my safety at risk to do it and it. There was obviously something wrong for them.

As for the whole not my problem attitude, my family is screwed up and fights enough, I don't like being in my own business and I'm not going to push my way into others. Yes, I have consoled complete strangers when I caught them crying, but never someone who was fighting. I don't like it and it makes me uncomfortable.

Hehe, my reply seems a little bitchy and that's purely to do with a phone call I just got off and not because of any of the replies. Will keep everyone updated on what I find out about the future of this story.

Oh, btw, I'm going to go post this in the off topic section, but I was already here and thought I'd mention it. I just finished watching serial mom for like the 6th time and realized my work is in the movie. Has anyone seen it? You know the woman she tortures on the phone? Well, the scene where she has a flashback and she's pulling into a parking lot filled with cars and she's turning into an empty spot and the lady cuts her off, that's our parking lot and the jo ann's sign can be seen in the scene. Apparently she was going to jo anns cause back then that was the only store in the parking lot. I was just like...woah! rewind!

Serial Mom is a great movie. I'd like to know the shortcut she used to get from the Towson area down to Hammerjack's as fast as she did.

Towson is on the north side of Baltimore. Hammerjack's was on the south side of Baltimore, where the M&T Bank Stadium is now.

Now to watch the movie again and figure out which location it is.

Well, one thing about a cop responding to a robbery or burglary call, is that he or she knows that 'the customer is always wrong,' and can act accordingly
Who hears all your prayers? Why, the NSA, of course!
