  • 1,2,3 strikes you're out at the scam game

This story is so good, I have to share.

Today I had a call from a lady (I'm using the term loosely). She called up and asked for a manager. Since I was kinda busy at the time, I asked her what this was about. She told me it was about sandwiches. I told her that I could help her. All this happened while I was trying to make an order for customers waiting.

Scammer: "I need to speak with a manager."
Me: "What's this in regard to"
    S: "Sandwiches."
M: "OK I can help you."
S: "Last night I came in through the drive through and I was missing some cheeseburgers."

Strike 1: We don't have a drive thru.

    M: "We don't have a drive thru."
S: "Last night I came in and was missing some sandwiches."
M: (I know for a fact that she's scamming me, but just for the hell of it
I play along for a short bit) "what time were you in about?"
    S: "7:30 or 8"
    M: "we closed at 8."
S: "it was close to close."
M: (looking through the journal just for the fun of it) "I'm sorry there were no multiple cheeseburger orders during that time." Strike 2.
S: "OK, bye" and she hung up
The third strike: I was the one working last night, and there were no take out orders, at all, after 5 pm. I also clearly remember every order I had during that time period last night.

    BUSTED!

Now I do have her phone # on caller ID, should I stick the knife in her and call the police?

No point in calling the police. Even if they do care enough to check it out, she'll just claim it was an honest mistake.
You gotta polish a memory like a stone. Chip off the parts that remind you it was just a game. Work it until it's indistinguishable from any other memory.

Nah, no real reason to call the cops on someone trying to pull a fast one.

But you might want to call any other stores your company has (or similar) in your area to let them know about this would-be scammer.

If you haven't already, you should also notify your manager & co-workers, in case she tries it again.

A lot of people have heard about it, and we all have gotten a good laugh over it. We are also the only location of our restaurant within an hour of here, so no problems there.

The scammer couldn't have picked a worse store to try this with. She calls a store w/o a drive thru. It's a one person operation after 1 yesterday, and she tries to pull it on me, who would have taken, and made her order last night. Talk about dumb.

I've decided not to go to the police with this. The only reason I would is if she tries this somewhere else, and the police are looking for her. I have her # in our comedy folder, and on the stupid customer list.
