It's raining foam/customer got to clean up their own mess
I wonder if you could have called the police and had her arrested for vandalism and attempted shoplifting.
Love the the nice strong spine your manager has. Amazed that the woman paid.
Did she pitch a fit as she was paying??
Apparently she was given the choice of paying and leaving and never coming back, or being arrested at which time we would receive an eventual payment and she might receive jail time. I think she took the better deal.
The annoying thing is that it would have taken her a while to do all that, but she wasn't noticed. This was mainly because the only people there were my manager and myself. That's not my manager's fault, it was the regional manager's fault for deciding that since money's tight it'd be best to make one person do four people's jobs. He got in trouble and now all of us are getting more hours cause we no longer have to work alone! So at least something good came out of this. Only ten of us work there, and I'm seeing some of my CWs for the first time in months.
You know, to get that foam knife she would have had to of gone behind the counter. If I didn't have to stock as well as man the cutting counter and register I would have noticed.

Sounds great! Glad you all are doing much better.
See, this is what these head honchos just don't get. You need to spend a little money to make money. Cutting hours and burning out your best employees is only going to send the customers away due to "lack of service", not to mention bringing out the thieves to take advantage of fewer employees.
It happens time and time again, yet they just can't see that action A leads to consequence B.
Holy crap! I think I just saw a !!! A manager that actually MADE a customer pay for stuff they destroyed AND clean up their own mess!! Your manager RAWKS!!!

They don't teach that one at those fancy MBA schools.

Why should they see it? Sh*t always rolls downhill, never up. By the time any effects get up to the upper levels, it's so diluted by all the other stuff that they have no particular reason to notice it.
From personal experience, that's part of what contributed to Winn-Dixie's bankruptcy. "Make-do, make-do, make-do". until they make-did themselves out of almost all of their market. Just before they closed down everything but their Florida operations, at my store I was running photo lab, a cash register (not the photo lab register, regular one), dairy section, and stocking frozen. Alice had it easy, with the Red Queen's race.
No matter how low my opinion of humanity as a whole gets, there are always over-achievers who seek to surpass my expectations.

What's pretty interesting is that the banks that didn't get sucked up in the sub-prime mess were the ones where the CEO was paid a fairly modest amount and as a result didn't see $$$ in his eyes. The push customer service but in order to have good customer service you can't have employees that aren't frazzled. If the employees get the impression that the company doesn't care, why should they?
Interesting quote on my planner today:
"YOu cannot manage men into battle. You manage things, you lead people." - Grace Hopper
I still think she should have been arrested after cleaning up her mess.
What if she'd been an even bigger whackjob than she apparently was. She had your foam knife. She could have gotten frustrated once she tore up all the foam and gone after you and your manager.
I hope they gave you a nice place to lock up the foam knife to keep any other do-it-yourselfers-before-they-pay-for-the-supplies from helping themselves.
