And people that just chow down in stores? Ugh, hate them. (I know, some circumstances a person needs to eat *NOW*, but pay for it, and carry the trash out.) Even as a customer, I get pissed finding opened food even if it's something I would never eat.
IMHO hypoglycemia [diabetic or otherwise] is the only cause to need to eat IMMEDIATELY ... and if you happen to know you tend towards hypoglycemia, it is up to YOU to carry glucose tablets, or some other form of snacky stuff [I carry glucose tabs, they are not tasty, no matter how they tweak the flavoring =(]

Whenever I take my younger goddaughters out with me shopping, I carry snacks with me, and we try to graze something before we actually go. Small kids can get really whingy if they are hungry and tired ... so you need to think ahead and prepare.

People don't think where the money comes from or goes to in a store. I guess they see a big store like Wal-Mart, for example, and think that if they break things, use stuff, or steal that it comes out of the big CEO's paychecks; however, in reality they're screwing over the people in that store.
Also part of the reason why prices go up. So, in effect, they're screwing themselves over.

They of course don't see it that way. They just see rising prices and figure it must be the fault of somebody. If I remember correctly, grocery store margins are pretty thin as it is which is why a place like Meijer will go into other business to supplement their grocery business. If you have people stealing stuff, that cuts right into the profit which means that prices will have to go up. If stealing becomes too much of a problem, the store might end up closing and then where will these people be? Oh yeah, they'll be complaining that there are no stores in high theft areas....d'uh. If it costs more to run the buiness than comes in....

There are some "consumer advocacy" folks who RECOMMEND opening packages in store to make sure they have the correct item and all the components inside and you don't end up taking home a box of bricks you thought was a PS3.

But even I am astounded about the diapers thing.

I'm always turning in random opened packages to the clerks when I go shopping. I hate to see such waste, and I hate even more the idea that either some clueless customer will get shorted, or some checker will have to deal with an irate SC who just wants an excuse to have a bitchfest.

Even the diapers were moved to the front of the store because, when they had been in the back, people would open the box, grab a new diaper and change their kids there. Then they leave the opened box AND the messy diaper there.
Wow, and to think I used to get annoyed when they'd grab an air freshner off the shelf and spray some of it in the air to see what it smelled like. Granted, it probably wasn't a significant amount, and I'm sure someone else bought the can before too many people sampled it, but it was still a pet peeve of mine.

those consumer advocacy folks ask that you check the package before leaving the store... i.e. after you pay, open the box to avoid finding tiles/bricks in the box, unless you are really buying a box of tiles/bricks

This is what I thought too, but I think a great many folks picked up on it as meaning to open the stuff BEFORE you purchase.

I really hate the SCs who hide perishable merch in the store when they decide they don't want it.

One day I pulled almost $60 of spoiled perishable mech from around the store. In case you haven't guessed, we take that as a loss which hurts our shrink numbers and sooner or later get the DM/Corp mad at us and we have some suit scrutinizing the amount of EVERY perishable product we prepare each day. This intern will eventually hurt the store budget including payroll the the SCs complain that we don't have enough employees to help them.

yeah. They should ammend that to checking after you've bought the item. Get out of the checkout lane, go off to the side, open what you've bought and make sure it has what it's supposed to. That way, if something's wrong it's easy to return, and they aren't leaving opened boxes of stuff laying around that have to be taken off the shelf.

Then, there are also those who try and steal stuff by stuffing crap into an opened box, or under something in the hopes you won't notice it. As if my back isn't bad enough, we have to lift and transfer EVERYTHING that comes through the line because people have hidden dvds and the like under these fifty lbs bags of dog food. >_<

The only thing I will open in the store before I buy is the carton of eggs to make sure there aren't any broken ones in the carton. Otherwise, I can wait until I get home.

As for eating in the store, one of my pet peeves when I was a cashier was people eating in line. Especially if they are trying to talk as well....

A package of Immodium, with some of the contents missing.

I guess when you have that problem, you just want it to go away. <.<

The ones that annoy me are when they open one package to see if it is what they want and if it is, they drop that one and grab an unopened one to buy.
One day I had a customer do that right in front of me ( I was helping them ), I stood there and forced them to buy the open one

I always wondered about that policy. But then, I'd never try to hide anything, so it never occurred to me. I always tried to face the UPS codes up and/or forwards for easier scanning of the big stuff.
