  • It's 38 cents!

So this guy made me reopen my register because I had given him back 36 cents instead of the 38 cents that was indicated. I'm aware that the economy is bad right now, but to resort to being that much of a penny pincher? It's not like I shortchanged him by 5 dollars. It was two lousy cents!

Was he rude in how he asked for it back? Is there some great difficulty in opening your till (manager required, or something)? Because with the sparse details provided, I gotta say while I'd just shrug it off, it's still his money, 2 cents or not.

I agree with you both, if that's possible. But as the customer, as far in debt as I am, and as broke as I am, I STILL wouldn't have even noticed 2 cents. I mean, whatEVER.

I agree. Yeah, it's just two cents, but it IS his money. Some people could care less if it's a quarter or even a dollar. To others, whether frugal or in need, that penny matters.

          Again because of sparse details:

A lot depends upon what was said by whom, when and how. I've closed the drawer and had forgotten to get out a last bit of change. The customer usually points it out. Me I offer right away to get it out, usualy by asking for them to wait for me to ring the next customer through. They're usually nice to me about it or tell me to foget it at that point. I think it is usually more important to the customer how you react to the fact that you shorted them change than the actual change itself when it's that small....most of them. A bad reaction will turn them into justifiable SC's. Remember we could be the Suckey Worker(SW) instead of them really being the SC.

He could have needed those 2 cents to fill up his pockets with change to make exact change next time he pays for something. At work, one of my coworkers and I noticed a trend with some gentlemen carrying MASS quantities of change. we also wondered what happens when they run out. we will never know

I guaran-damn-tee you that had he only given you 36 cents to pay you when he owed 38, he would have pitched a fit that you made him pay the extra two cents.

Exactly, it IS his money. As long as he was nice about it, I don't see a problem (only a bit of inconvenience). After all, the store isn't going to take two cents less than the total price from him, why should he take two cents less than his rightful change?

                Madness takes it's toll....
                Please have exact change ready.
