  • Waitresses are NOT your playtoys!!

I REALLY don't know why people think servers are their personal playtoys......
(mind you my restaurant has about 25 tables/booths and counter seats total) We only have one waitress on except for holidays and Fridays.

    1.-----
I have one particular customer that doesn't like his coffee refilled until the LAST DROP is gone. Ok I can understand that. but the prick part is I will walk by, look in his cup see there is 2 inches and walk away to other tables. He will wait until I am on the other side of the restaurant and start yelling and demanding his coffee cup filled.
The first few times i thought it was coincidence but 3 months later I see this is a DAILY reoccurring theme.

    2.-----
To shorten things, another couple comes in orders AA and BB to drink I bring them said drinks they decided they want XX and YY. I bring XX and YY they dump them on the floor and ask for CC and DD. I said if they changed their mind one more time I have to charge for ALL the drinks.
They said they weren't ready to order yet then as I walk into the kitchen to serve food they start shouting their order at me from across the room.

    3.----
Don't think a waitress can sit there and listen to your life story because you are giving us a $2 tip on a $15 order. We are't your peronal companion and frankly most of the time, we don't care!

Um...about number 2, why did you have to threaten to charge them for all the drinks. If they are wilfully spilling product on the floor they should be charged REGARDLESS.

I wholeheartly agree. if the are dumping drinks on the floor even if it is soda, no threatening involved they get charged. no exceptions.

The owner is a bit of a pushover. She wants to try and see the best in people. Sadly though if a customer complains she will take that to heart over hearing the story from her crew.

I know she basically allows for us to take a lot of crap and keep a smile on our face.

Honestly I'd rather work for an owner with a firmly placed spine who I KNOW would take no crap from customers like those in your story.

Actually I think #2 sounds like a bully. Could you imagine how he would treat a wife or girlfriend?

Oh God. Oh sweet Jesus God. My ex-boyfriend...would do this...every time we went out to eat. Even though we are still good friends, I cannot even bring myself to go out to eat with him. Time and again, he engages the waitperson is this drawn out conversation...asking all kind of inane questions, like they're two people waiting for a bus, chatting to pass the time. And the waitperson is standing there, obviously busy and needing to get away, but they force themselves to be polite, while I sit there with my face burning. I finally FLIPPED out on him about it one day. He didn't get it, though. Our waiter does not want to stand there and have a conversation with you. Asshole.

All three of these examples are illustrations that you are not taking control of your customers. I know this may sound odd, but you need to control them, not allow them to control you. It is not easy to do, but it is doable. It is how the better servers seem to have so much less trouble with customers that seem to be impossible to others.

This is unacceptable behavior, and to let it go on for three months? Hell no. Hell no. He needs to be told that this is unacceptable, period.

The second part is unacceptable. The first part is not only unacceptable, but something I would throw people right the fuck out for.

This is annoying, but actually the least unacceptable thing, as this is an unfortunate part of the job. It is also the easiest to deal with, as these people are controllable, you just have to do it in a gentle manner. "Yep. Uh huh. I see. Oh, excuse me....I have to go take care of some other customers, sir." Etc., etc.

As for your boss, sounds like a walking jellyfish. Wench. I am sure there are better places to work and better bosses to work for.

I must have read this title wrong.....

When I was a waitress, there were a few customers who thought that my butt was just ripe and ready for the pinching and grabbing. And management seemed to agree.

No worries, I quit after a month or less. My first overnight shift, I made less than $30 in tips, I had several stiffs from the drunks, especially the drunk guys that I wouldn't give my number to or sit on their laps.

I was thinking the same thing, Blas.

I was also surprised to see that the stories in here weren't about sexual harassment.

Ya know, even with sexual harrassment it's partly about controlling the situation. For example, my niece Princess was working a job as a cocktail waitress at one of the more popular bars here in Key West (until she moved up north to go to college). A guy touched her, she would tell them she'd rip off his hand and beat him with it, OR that she would make sure he died of thirst. That usually got them into shape. A guy suggested something untoward, she would make it clear that that just wasn't going to happen. Yeah, it's important that management has your back, at least to some degree, and a lot of them don't.....but most bar owners/managers know that the good ones (servers) are harder to replace than the customers.....especially in a tourist town like this one.

sounds like they're too drunk to be served more and they need to leave.
even if they're sober. f'ing pricks
