  • "The lot was not full; Do I have to pay?"

I am inside the booth watching a movie when the phone rings. Obviously this customer arrived when I went on a short break. There are 2 signs which are easily seen, if you look, before you enter the garage. One states Visitor parking $5.00 per vehicle. The other states Visitor parking $5.00 per entry. But we know sucky customers do not read signs. The information regarding the 2 signs is important.

The customer had an attitude from the moment I spoke to her, & then it changed in the end.

me: "Visitor parking booth. How may I help you?"
female customer: "How do we get out of here?"
me: "Since we do not take payments inside the booth, you have to pay for your parking inside the bldg. either at the vending machine on the garage level or at the parking office on the 3rd floor."
female customer: "Well...there is nothing stating we have to pay."
me: *what do the 2 signs stating $5.00 mean to you? Free parking?"
"There are 2 signs stating Visitor parking is $5.00. You pay for your parking inside the bldg. either at the vending machine on the garage level or at the parking office on the 3rd floor."
female customer: "The garage was not full when we arrived. Do we have to pay?"
me: "I am looking at a sign stating Visitor parking $5.00 per vehicle. I also see another sign stating Visitor parking is $5.00 per entry."
female customer: "But I did not get a ticket when I arrived."
me: "A ticket is not needed to pay for your parking. Only money is needed to pay for your parking. And just because the lot was not full does not mean parking is free. You have to pay for your parking because you parked in a parking spot."
female customer: "So I pay inside the bldg."
    me: "correct"

I hang up the phone. She finally backs up & pays. I do not understand her logic.

If no one had to pay unless the lot was full, you'd never make any money. After all, if I knew that was the case, I just wouldn't pull in unless I knew every spot was taken up.

If it was full, she wouldn't be able to park at all.

How the heck would that work?

If the lot ISN'T full, you get to park for free...

If the lot IS full, you have to pay...

But you can't park because the lot is FULL...
