  • Wrong Address (Quick)

Apparently when someone reads me their new address over the phone as "Seventy one twenty three annoying lady Lane" she does not mean

    7123 Annoying Lady Ln

    no she means

    70123 Annoying Lady Ln

and I should have known this and its all my fault....

According to her "logic," shouldn't her address then be 701203 Annoying Lady Ln?

Oh, goodie, the people who don't understand how to read numbers out.

I maintain the inventory system for my work (I used to do all the entry, but now someone else does most of the routine stuff) and the bossman is always drilling it into people's heads to read off part numbers one character at a time.

And then he does it the wrong way half an hour later >.<

I hate this too. I constantly have to tell techs to read each numeral. Otherwise they start saying 'fourteen' and we, who input numbers all day long and can type them at the speed of light, have already put in 4 before they say the 'teen'. Same for seventeen, sixteen, etc. It's really annoying after a while.

And yeah, definately don't mix and match!

You should've told her in your calmest tone that seventy one hundred twenty three isn't the same as seventy one twenty three. Just to confuse her a little bit.

Hmm, couldn't "seventy one hundred twenty three" be interpreted as "seventy one hundred twenty three"?

Just read each digit separately, and spare every one the confusion.

See, that's why I'm grateful to have a four digit address. Reading them in groups of two is easy and unconfusing like that.

People tend to use something similar down here for ZIP codes -- but it ends up not being sucky simply because *everybody* does it; thus, everybody knows what it really means. The ones in my general areas all read as 7000#, with only the final digit varying. Even at the post office, unless someone spells it out digit by digit, this is invariably pronounced as "seven thousand #".

I've made mistakes like that when talking to suppliers... that's why I state each number seperately now... "seven zero one two three".

I made a mistake like that when checking out of the Hilton in Vegas... or maybe it was the Rio (Forgotten which Fan Faire it was, though I think it was the Rio now that I think of it). Said we were from room "Twenty One Oh Three" or something like that, and she checked me out of 20103 instead of 2103. (Or some variant of that). And I almost missed it too until I looked at the room charges and realized they didn't match what we had used, and then the name wasn't the same either. Luckily I clued in in time and we got it straightened out, and I knew it was entirely my fault.

Oh, not entirely. The desk clerk should have known there was both a 2103 and a 20103 in their hotel and asked for clarification.

Mine is only 3 digits. And I'll either say eight one two or eight-twelve, depending on if I'm talking to a person or having to use one of those automated systems.
