  • Mr. Dips Got to Witness the Aftermath of "I'm Going Elsewhere!"

This happened at the coin shop. A couple came in selling some silver coins for buillion value. The boss offered his usual price.

They accused him of trying to cheat them and stormed out with the statement, "Fine! We'll just sell them to elsewhere!"

Mr. Dips was looking out the window and noticed that they walked right into the pawn shop that shares a building with the coin store.

Mr. Dips pointed this out to his coworkers. They all know the pawn shop owner very well, you see. They knew it would a good show. Sp everyone got to watch them storm out of the pawn shop complete with matching cat bum faces.

Unless they bought the silver in 1980, more than likely, they would have made pretty good money off of the sale.

    Talk about dumb.

Now, unless they were actually bullion coins, why would they be selling stuff like that for just the metal content?

I mean, yeah, times are rough, but you'd have to be pretty desperate to get rid of 'em and/or not know exactly what you have (*cough*red flags*hack*) to even think about doing something like that.

Are you in the know enough and able to say what they brought in? I'd understand if not, but maybe they were making a bit of a mistake.

Believe me there are plenty of coins that are only worth the metal they're stamped on. Anything that isn't in good condition or was issued *only* to collectors by private mints is worth more as scrap than as coins.

But I agree it is worth checking in a price guide before selling anything. It's better to have some idea than none.

Mr. Dips' boss is an honest asshole. He's not going to cheat sellers or buyers but he's not going to spend time sugar-coating the truth with them either. It tends to annoy the thinner-skinned.

Oh sorry Jester, I guess I forgot to tell you about the breeding program. While my mind is on the subject would you mind peeing into this cup? There's some magazines in the room at the end of the hall on the right if you want. Don't go into the room on the left.

Wouldn't give me any red flags. Maybe thats because I sell all the silver coins I get at work for the "buillion value". Why? We have two places in town that buy old coins and they will not give you a good price. I know they have to buy low enough to make money when they sell it, but....

                Example, figures are made up...
If a coin is listed at $10 and they have them in the display cases at $9 and they will only offer you $5 and I know I can sell them to a guy for $8 to be melted down. Guess where I am going to go....

I have sold some REALY nice silver coins to the guy I know that melts them down.

Okay, I know I'm not all that bright, did not major in any science, and am not a doctor....but I am pretty sure that peeing into a cup has exactly nothing to do with breeding in any way, shape, form, or science fiction scenario.

If you avail yourself of the magazines and first there may be semen enough in your pee afterwards . It seems an unnecessary extra step, though.

The $5 price for a coin listed at $10 and sold at $9 is actually very good. Coin collectors don't typically have money and buying one for resale as a coin in the hopes that an interested buyer for that particular item comes along is a risky prospect.

In the meantime the shop owner has to pay his rent, his staff and utilities while the coin might just sit there. Thus, 50% is about all you can expect if you sell a coin to a dealer. If you want more some dealers are willing to sell on consignment which means you don't get anything until they sell (but you get more IF they sell).

Bullion, on the other hand, always has buyers. So dealers can buy it with a smaller margin because they know they'll have no trouble reselling it quickly.

That was my thought as well, but I was keeping it to my self.
