So covering breaks and such today, working as assistant FES. I come back from lunch and everything's caught up, so with nothing better to do. I start bagging on number eleven, and am informed the customer requested paper.
SC: And don't make them so heavy I can't lift them.
Me: Of course, ma'am. (And here on out I make sure they're light enough for me to lift by pinching them)
After 3 of her bags are done, she glances over what I've got.
SC: And if you bag them like that, they'll just fall over in an SUV and spill everywhere!
Me: Well... I could get some stickers and tape them closed if you want.
SC: Don't you get smart with me!
Me: I'm just saying that's the only real option, ma'am.
SC: Do I need to just do this for you?!
And that's when I just started ignoring her, put the last bunch of cans in a bag, and walked off.
So you know, I was putting cans on the bottom, then produce, then bread/chips. It makes them bottom-heavy and hard to tip, plus keeps from crushing anything. If you're even marginally competent, it's the only way to bag paper.
Also, they've been getting on us to bring our ring speeds up, to the point where they have us getting in a "huddle" every time we have a break in customers. And every time they basically say the same things. Now, I've already got one of the fastest ring times in the area, so none of it really applies to me. But just for fun, sometimes I try to essentially "set the curve" for this sort of thing. And so I was maintaining about 31.5 items per minute for the entire day.
Until this woman came through.
She had a WIC order, and was shopping for someone else, so really knew jack about it. Plus, they've recently changed the lists of allowed items entirely, so that even I don't know them all that well. She has a bottle of Cran-Grape juice.
Not allowed. No blends.
So she goes and gets another juice. Not allowed. It has sugar added.
And another. Not allowed. It has calcium added.
And another. Not allowed. It's another blend.
And another. Not allowed. It's a high-price brand.
And finally a bagger goes back and gets a store-brand, nothing-added, all-grape, 100% juice.
It rings up and she pays and I can finally get the people behind her in line. This whole ordeal took about 15 minutes for 5 items, and dropped my IPM for the day from 31 to 20.
