  • The ASM and the Ink Guy

OK, finishing up thre stories from my current job......

This happened a while back, June-ish as I recall.

It's close to the end of the day, and we are somewhat busy. A Eurporean gentlemen (I think he was Portugese) comes in with some ink cartridges. He explained that he got them "a few weeks ago" and they were the wrong ones, and he wanted to return them for a refund or exchange. Now, techincally ink cartridges fall under the 14 day return policy (electronics) but as long as we still sell them, and they have at least 6 months of shelf life left, we'll usually take them back. At first glance, there didn't seem to be an issue, so I told him we should be able to take them back, and he went to get more ink.

WHile he is gone, I examine the cartridges. I find that they have a Staples price/SKU sticker on them. While this may seem to be a good thing, it wasn't; Staples hasn't individually priced ANY non-clearance items since before I started working there. Curious, I did a price check on the SKU and it came up at a current price of $6.50.

$6.50. Original price was $40+. Okaaaaaay.........these must be old, because they are obviously on F status (final clearance). And he didn't have a receipt, so I can't give him more than $6.50 in store credit. I don't think he'll like this. He comes back with some HP ink and a couple freebies that were being given away with HP ink at the time.

Me: Sir, these cartridges look like they might be on the old side. I'm gonna have to check with my boss before i can take these back.

SC: OK. I understand; you need permission. That's fine. He'll OK it.

*pages MOD; Dan calls from the front office*

Dan: What do you need, Dave1982?

Me: I've got a guy looking to return some ink, he doens't have a receipt, and it looks a little old.

    Dan: I'll come out. *click*

SC: Why did you say that? I just got them! They aren't old!

*Dan appers from front office; takes ink cartridges and eyes them suspiciously*

Dan: Did you do a price check on this SKU?

Me: Yeah. It came up at $6.50 *points*

Dan: Well sir, all I can give you is $6.50. These are on clearance.

SC: But I paid $40+ for them. The sticker is right on there. THAT'S the price, so give me that.

Dan *firing up computer*: That may have been the original price, but not the current price. Do you have a receipt?

SC: No, but I paid $40+ for them only a couple months ago.

Oh really? You told ME a couple WEEKS, not months.

Dan: Sir, according to the system we haven't sold any in over a year. I don't even have a history on these they are so old. Frankly, I'm amazed that it even came up at $6.50.

SC: Well that can't be right. I got them more recently than that.

    Dan: Well, then I'll need to see a receipt. I can't give you a $40+ refund for a $6.50 item that I can't resell. I'll be out $40+.

    SC: *angry* But it's a $40+ item!!!

Dan: At one time, yes. Not anymore, sir. I can only give you $6.50 for these.

SC: *pissed* Look, I understand where you're coming from [riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight......] but I paid good money for those cartridges, like it says on the sticker. Then my printer dies so I can't use them, and you're telling me that in addition to having to pay for the new printer, I have to eat what I paid for that ink? That's just not right.

Again the story changed! Now he doesn't need them because the printer died, when he told ME that he had gotten the wrong cartridges. This guy is SO full of crap. And while all this is going on, he has the Service Desk completely tied up, so everyone has to go to Register 1, which is now developing a long line. But since this jerk isn't talking to me I just lean back and "enjoy" the show.

Dan: That's unfortuante sir, but as I explained, we haven't sold these in over a year. The normal return policy is 14 days. Notw, if the price had only JUST gone down, I could strech it a bit and give you the full refund, IF you had a receipt. But these have been on clearance for some time. I can't strech it a year. I do that, and we lose $40. THAT isn't right, either.

SC: Look, I paid good money for them......

*goes into broken record mode with Dan for a few minutes*

Dan: OK sir, here's the bottom line: I can take these back for $6.50, or you can keep them. That's it. I'm not giving you a full refund without a receipt.

    *SC explodes*
SC: *screaming* That is just BULLSHIT. I can't believe this! I pay good money for something and you won't give it back to me when I can't use the product. You guys SUCK. What's your name? I'll be calling corporate!

Dan: Fine *gives him a business card*

Meanwhile, SC still has the new, HP ink in his hands. I don't want to say anything, but I need to.

Me: Um, did you still want to buy that?

SC: No, you know what, YOU keep it! *drops ink on counter; Dan snatches it and the freebies*

SC: Hey! Where are you going with that stuff?!?!

Dan: You said you didnt' want it I'm putting it away!

SC: I want that free stuff!

Dan: Then buy this ink. You only get the free stuff with an ink purchase.

    SC: *quietly* Fucking dickhead................

    *leaves*

This story is why I like this particular ASM. He doesn't take crap from anyone, and is willing to stand his ground. Unfortunely, this guy DID call corporate, and corporate told Dan to give they guy his money back. Spineless desk pukes

That is why I don't understand store policy why even have one if you don't enforce it. basically they could have stated the exact same thing your asm did but instead they caved and undermined that ASM and everyone who works for them. Corporate do not understand this because they sit in offices and not at the register!

Damn, that was kind of a shity ending to an otherwise wonderful story. I wish these suits would have to come in and actually work in the stores. They wouldn't last a day.

Where I work, we have some posters in our breakroom where some of our high-ups tell stories about going back to a store and working a register for a day (after having been corporate big-wigs for the past 5 years). They didn't fare too well.

What's really odd, though, is that the impression I got from the posters was that they actually did worse than I did at my first day on the job!

          yeeeaaaaaahhhhhhh Dan....BOOOOOOOOOOO Corporate.

for a $40 ink cartridge to be marked down that low it has to be hella old (or purchased off of ebay). but thats why I use canon at work (found a site I can get cartridges for 99 cents for my i900 printer). Which helps when I do some runs that will go thru upwards of 30-50 cartridges at a run.

            No shit.

I used to constantly badger our store manager to come out and "do my job" when I was at Office Depot - my job being cashier (check out, returns, and exchanges), copy center, answering phones ("Pick up by the third ring!" was his motto... yeah, ok, three-ring this, ass!), sending faxes, ordering stamps and business cards, paging different departments, checking prices, security at the front door, ordering stuff from the website for customers, etc.

He would laugh and pat me on the back in that "poor you" kind of way - but deep down, I knew that he knew that he couldn't handle it.

Can you imagine a District Manager or a Corporate Office Buffoon trying to deal with customers 8 hours a day?!

I'd PAY money to see that!

I could never figure that one out. Policies are put into place...and then corporate caves....even though it costs the company money. Then corporate turns around and complains when they "aren't meeting projections"

Not only that, then they tweak about "shrink", and cut down on our bonuses.

Customer service folks back at corporate probably get evaluated by how many customers they satisfy.

So if they just give SC what they demand, they're happy and the corporate guys just came a closer to earning bonuses/promotions.

And the managers in the trenches just earned a black mark for not doing a better job at satisfying customers.

Which is probably why they're so spinless when SC demand they overrule what the frontline clerk is telling them. They know that if the SC goes up the chain to corporate, the SC will get what he wants and the manager is closer to a reprimand.

So they just give in to the SC and avoid a headache with corporate.
