At my store we have lots of offers this time of year for a free gift card with purchase. We've got a few partner gift card offers too, which means that if you buy product A or sign up for service B in our store, the partner company will give you a gift card for our store.
Right now we have an offer for a free gift card to our store when you sign up for TV or internet service with a certain cable company through our store. When I explain it to people, I'm very careful to point out that the free gift card will be mailed to them by the cable company directly a few weeks after their service has been installed. The gift cards are not issued by or from our store or our corporate office.
Yet, invariably, I get asked EVERY SINGLE TIME at the register if they can go ahead and use that gift card toward today's purchase. Since this promotion started on November 1, I have signed up eight customers for one or more services with this cable company. Since November 1, I have been asked eight times at the register why they didn't get that $50 (or more) discount I mentioned earlier.
Woe is me.
