My aunt's a teacher. And the best gift she got was a tape recorder from my mom. She's had to use it several times when the little brats got caught doing something they shouldn't and get punished and then run home to mommy and say 'Teacher did something bad while I was alone in a meeting with her!' and then mom takes it to the principal and then they call my aunt forward who produces the tape recorder and then sits back and watches little darling go pale with 'OH S*!T. I got caught!' and mommy go red with embarrassment and anger.

And that was a long run on sentence....

I've been subbing for a music teacher in a school with a reputation (bad area and even worse there's a magnet school right next door, so the more motivated students are sent there.) I love it. The way I see it the students have big personalities. I find that with kids like that it's best to make them feel guilty. I gave them a rest quiz, informed them that there were four different tests and still got kids cheating. The one kid who got a 0 was sitting next to the kid who got a perfect score. I had a talk with him, let him know how disappointed I was and that WE do not cheat, because this is what happens, and I gave him his score back. I think it's easier to deal with the boys than the girls though.

Almighty ALT, I swear I am going to keep that one in mind for when I start teaching.

As for Kheldarson and any other teachers, I salute you for the insane amount of crap you have to deal with from those kids.

It doesnt bode well that the principal is making you meet with B to discuss this. Its sad that a good teacher has to be second guessed by those that should to be some kind of back up.

            So update.

Did not have to meet with principal and B. B got written up for back talking another, more experienced, teacher on the team. In fact after a meeting with A's mom about her steady behavioral decline, principal pretty much said that anybody the other teacher wrote up would automatically be sent to ISS. On the plus side, didn't have to deal with B and things with A should calm down. On the other hand, still feel like the principal doesn't trust me. And add into the mix the fact that he's also informed me that I can't listen to my music around the kids (I had some goth rock stuff on--Nightwish, Kamelot, and the like--when some kids walked in to talk to me during my planning). Bleah.

When I caught people copying from me, I wrote wrong answers and let them turn it in first. Surprise-surprise when I get an 'A' and douche get's an F.
Holy carp. What a great idea. I wish I'd've thought of that when I was in college.

Economics 10.1. Entry level class for the business majors, first semester out of high school, for the kids who think they're still in high school, goof off the whole semester (and disrupt the class with their conversations: hey, if you don't wanna pay attention that's your business, but at least have the courtesy to freaking whisper) and then panic when exams come round. Suddenly I've got 20 new-found friends, all of whom want to sit next to me or around me. Just before the exam starts, I get up and walk to the other side of the lecture hall, and there's this mob silently following in my footsteps like I'm the Pied Piper. It got to the point that I was covering my answer sheet with a blank sheet of paper and writing underneath it, and the kid behind me had the chutzpah to offer me $20 to take the cover sheet away. I told him what he could do with his 20. He says "Come on, give me a break man, I really need to pass this test!" I told him "Well you should have studied for it then."

I got so urinated off at the people trying to cheat from me that by the last exam I was writing א ב ג ד instead of A B C D, and giving the professor a key as to what the letters meant. Was seriously considering doing it in invisible ink and giving him the decoder, but I couldn't find the Magic Writer pen.

(Hadn't seen it since grade school; I did this on an exam in 7th grade, and the teacher was Not Amused.)

Okay, this I have no problem with. This is what they invented headphones for.

Unless, of course, you were using headphones and he still said you couldn't listen to it. Then it's crap.

Heh. I actually blew off my required Econ class more and more as the semester went on. And my grades improved. Not by cheating, either. It got to the point where on the last pre-final test, I was actually correcting the professor on one question that he had listed the wrong answer for. Even though I was not a math major or business major, and had not, in fact, attended class in well over a month at that point. Of course, that's another story.

Hell, I never said I was the best academic model....just unconventional and unusual.

I once wrote a math exam with a green crayon.
Also I wrote my HS senior German exam with a 3 foot long novelty pencil

Here's an interesting story about cheating and a very bad teacher:

I took grade 11 drafting, and had a teacher who was not shy at all about his opinion that girls shouldn't be allowed to take tech/shop courses.
I do this one assignment, and get perfect marks for it. A cute girl in my class who was getting behind on her work asked me if she could copy it. I let her.

Instead of copying it, she just erased my name and the mark (everything is done in pencil in drafting class, even the grading) and handed it in as her own. She only got 70% for it.

She went to a guidance councilor, confessed what she had done, but pointed out she only got lower marks because of her gender. GC went to the instructor, and asked what errors were made on the assignment to keep it from getting full marks. Teacher had no reply. He also wasn't allowed to teach shop classes any more.

                  But wait, there's more:

I found out a few years later, he was teaching social studies. A 15 year old girl asks to go to the bathroom. He tells her, in front of about 20 witnesses, that if he catches her going out for a cigarette he will rape her.

Most of the class walks out, and goes to the office to complain. School officials refuse to believe the students or take any action. The police, on the other hand, felt differently, with 20 or so corroborating sworn statements.

Teacher is teaching shop again. No female students. In prison.
                  Irony is delicious.

While I'm normally not a fan of people copying work (and our freehand assignments were graded on a curve, so that's a particularly sore point with me), if she did that deliberately then kudos to her. Either way, good for her for going and complaining about it, as opposed to saying two wrongs make a right (and to the guidance councilor for the same).

Okay, the teacher was completely wrong for saying that. I am not disputing that or defending him.

But how does that statement constitute prison? Seriously?

Do I think he should have gotten in trouble for that? Absofreakinglutely. Definitely fired. Probably banned from teaching. Probably cited with some criminal charge that might involve a short jail stint, some fine, some community service, and perhaps even probation. But PRISON? Really?

Lesse, off the top of my head, I've got abuse of position of authority over children, sexual harassment, uttering threats. That's without thinking about it. You could probably come up with a few more, and for threatening a 15 year old with rape, you can bet they came up with everything they possibly could.

infinitemonkies shows a Canada location so I don't know how it is up there, but in the US I'd be surprised if the guy even got a trial. Teachers don't even have one-on-one meetings with students anymore most places here, especially not behind closed doors. And normally any suspicion or accusation of sexual misconduct about a teacher gets them dropped. Fast and permanently. And they're not likely going to be teaching again any time soon.

I'm actually surprised it had to go past the school administration.

But yeah, Broomjockey covered it. Threats and sexual harassment directed towards a minor who's in your care? If there were no witnesses, good reason to doubt the story, and you had a good lawyer, you might, maybe, not go to jail.

Sex crime laws are one of my rant topics. I need to inflict one upon Fratching sometime.
