Contrary to what you might want to believe, blizzard conditions do not keep people away from the stores.

Our first big snowstorm of the year is winding down now. We probably didn't get as much snow as was forecast (which is good), but that may be because some of it fell as sleet and freezing rain first (which is bad). The roads are absolutely terrible even when plowed. Several people called out due to the snow, including both the opening cashiers.

Enter SC, who went to check out, noticed a line of a few people at the service desk, which was the only open register at the time, and started with the whole "There should be more people here, I wanna get out of here quickly, did you really think nobody would be out shopping today?" routine.

Service desk lady told her right out "You're lucky I'm even here today."

So what was the SC purchasing that was evidently so important that she ventured out in a blizzard to get it, you ask? Two cans of bean dip from the Frito Lay rack.

That's something I've noticed when it comes to weather... At the old video store, the worse the weather, the busier it got.

-45C cold? Let's rent a movie!

3 feet of snow? Let's rent a movie!

Power out? Let's rent a movie!

The worst part was this... It isn't too cold to rent something, but it's MUCH too cold to bring it back...

That reminds me of working at the Store 24 (now Tedeschi's) in a blizzard. It's like, the only place that stays open - even after Domino's pizza has shut down, and it's nigh UNHEARD-of for Domino's to close because of the weather - and people come in and act like it's the store's fault that we're so busy. (For extra fun - how about when the Ass. Man. locks all the coin in the office and goes to stay in an undisclosed motel so she can get back in for the morning shift, and you run out of pennies? Good times!)

No argument here. Last Friday we had snow falling which NEVER happens. It wasn't even sticking to the ground yet it was one of the busiest Fridays I've worked in a while.

It's the same thing at Subway. The crappier the weather conditions, the more busy it gets. OMGWTFBBQ.

That always happened at DaddyJim's pizza, too ... but for WALK-IN's, not so much for deliveries.... Stormy weather? 2 people waiting at all times. Flooding? 3 people. Delivery halted because we cannot safely go down people's streets and there's water coming in the front door? 5-6 customers inside the front area constantly until we lock the doors.

I'm kind of guilty of this one. If it's cold out, no way in hell am I going out in it for a movie. Video game? Yes (I'm looking at both of you, New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Zelda: Spirit Tracks) but if I happen to rent a movie on good weather and it gets crappy on the day I have to return it, then yes, I'm going to keep it an extra day.

However, since I'm a responsible customer, I will eat the late fee. It's a small price to pay to not have to go out in crappy weather.

When I worked food at the retail we sold more ice cream in December than June.

Here in 93 during the great blizzard a neighbor asked me to take him to the store for batteries for his radio since the power was out. So off we went (it's good to have 4WD) and I kid you not the road to Kroger/Food City/Red Food was lined with people coming back from said locations and almost all were toting Beer. Now I know being stuck at home with the wife and kids and whom ever else can be nerve wracking but to risk your life for beer??? Not me. Another neighbor asked me to take him to the store for beer and cigs, I told him no, if he needed food I'd take him but not for that stuff. Power was out for 5 days and most of that time the temp was in the teens and twenties. I have pictures of the kids walking on the ice that built up on the pool. (Note: It rarely snows here and when it does it's gone by noon.)
