  • "I'm the perfect man"

Okay, this guy wasn't exactly an SC...mostly entertaining, but he wouldn't leave me the hell alone!

So he comes up to my register tonight, and then after I total his order, he asks me about ink cartridges for printers. He was like, "there's none back there for Lexmark." I just say something like, "oh, that's odd." And then he talks about how he has this program on his computer that can make Christmas cards and whatnot...and that's why he needs the printer ink.

So then he pays...and I just lean over, cause I'm quite tired. I've been up since 630 this morning, and was there until 10 (I get up that early to get a parking spot...classes at 8 until 3, then work 5-10 today.) I tell him that, and then he was all saying, "well, yeah, I'm tired to...I have to get home as well. I haven't been home in 10 days."

I just look at him...not really caring, and I must have made some sort of motion for him to tell me more, cause he went on:

"Yeah, I'm a truck driver. My girlfriend says I'm the perfect man; I'm always out of the house."

Um...yeah. I wouldn't want my guy to be out of the house for like a week straight. That's just me though. I'm paranoid.

But this guy wouldn't leave me alone! When he FINALLY left after probly 10, 15 minutes, Rita (the CSM that was resetting the register next to me) turned to me and said, "Do you know that guy?" When I told her no, she burst out laughing. She was like, "it sounded like you do know him, from how he was talking to you."

I don't know if he was trying to hit on me or what...or just be nice and make conversation, or what...but he kinda creeped me out for talking to me for that long. I mean, I was trying to step from behind my register to go to the redline and get more customers, and he just kept talking...and I'm too nice to just walk away. Maybe that's my problem.

Poor guy was probably lonely and starved for human interaction in person. I couldn't imagine being a truck driver!

That said, he did make your job a little difficult by hanging around like that.

Hmm. His own girlfriend prefers when he's gone. That says volumes about him. Not to mention that he's hitting on you when he admits he's got a girlfriend- and yes, that is the passive aggressive form of flirting, sad as it is. The guy sounds like an ass.

People that are "too nice to walk away" are perfect targets for stalkers- not that this guy was one, I'm just saying with some guys you have to be rude to make them go away. We're conditioned to not act like that, and a lot of jerks use that to their advantage. They know that subconsciously, everyone wants to be liked. If you can't speak up, at least practice the cold stare, or as my husband calls it, the death glare. As I've said before, a fake wedding ring helps too.

There's a creepy guy that has come into my store twice..and spent half the time he was there hitting on me...my co-workers suggested something along those lines to keep him away!

I used that tactic at 7-11 and it did help, especially with the migrant tree planters.

Oh - fake wedding rings don't always help out - not everyone respects a wedding ring. My one friend states, "rings don't plug holes". He's a bit on the young side and very crass..

I've done the fake wedding ring thing in retail before. It didn't stop the determined ones. I was told right out by one that the ring was a lie! I mean, it was, but c'mon - if you come to that conclusion on your own - why can't you conclude that if I am lying about being involved, that must mean I DON'T WANT TO BE INVOLVED!

I think you're overinterpreting that statement a bit; sounds more like something (more or less) funny that he thought up himself. And if he truly were hitting on zeoqueen, why mention his girlfriend anyway?

Give the guy the benefit of the doubt; myself, I'm gonna go with lonely and bored. While I've never driven a truck, I've spent a few years doing sales trips for my company, and it gets boring after a while - I couldn't imagine doing that for weeks on end. He went a bit over the top with his conversation attempts, but that doesn't justify calling him an ass - it's not like he actually did anything.
You gotta polish a memory like a stone. Chip off the parts that remind you it was just a game. Work it until it's indistinguishable from any other memory.

Sometimes real wedding rings don't help out! Some jerks just will not take any hint whatsoever.

I got sick of being hit on when the bf and I went to play pool, so I wore my wedding ring hoping that I'd have fewer guys bothering me. Nope. In fact, one tried the "rings don't plug holes" line. I clocked him. Bouncers, two of whom have known me most of my life, descended and escorted him out the door. Bf just sat there with a grin on his face and told the guy he was talking to, "That's why I keep her, she can take care of herself."

Later the bf was taking care of me though.....my hand swelled up, not a good thing for someone who works with wire and beads all day. Felt like a wuss.

truckers get bored and lonely. having previously worked at a truckstop, and spent an awful lot of time drinking coffee at another, ive learned this the hard way. i am usually polite to them, even if they do butt in on conversations. i wouldnt want to be a trucker.

I am a truck driver. I am also often away for 4 to 5 days. I like being a truck driver. I am essentially my own boss. I decide when I take breaks and meals. I decide when and how long I work each day. The only thing that sucks is that I really can't call in sick when I wake up each day at work.

The biggest problem with my vocation, and the reason people like your truck driver customer end up in our industry, is that most of us are poorly-educated and get trapped here because we don't have the skills to get the same paycheck from a normal job. So once we try it and realize we it isn't for us, by that time rolls around our bills are comparative to our paycheck and unless you are willing to make a serious downgrade in your standard of living -- you are stuck. I use my CB radio to get what your truck driver customer got from you.

I have come to terms with the job and learned to find the good in it. I have resigned myself to the fact that this is how I can best provide for my family. Its not for everyone, but when you work for a good company it can really be a good job. I have seen and taken pictures of some amazing things that I likely would never have seen in my lifetime otherwise.

Yeah back when I worked security I would sometimes have an OTR driver talk to me for an extended time. Some of these guys (and gals) not all though, are starved for human interaction they dont get from the CB that they'll latch onto the first warm body that doesnt run away. And that last comment can be taken in multiple ways.
