As a customer, I try to keep in mind how much money I have in hand, or how much is in my checking when I use the debit card. When paying in cash, I just pay out of the cash in hand. I usually carry change, but prefer to use it for the vending machines at school or my work-study job. So, I actually like getting change back from purchases so that I can add it to my vending machine change or eventually my mad money stash. For me, I'd feel stupid to realize that I didn't have enough money to pay for whatever I brought to the checkout, and have no desire to make things more complicated just to go get exact change.

I always hated the customers at the gas station who did this little gem:
Walk in, ask for a pack of smokes. I'd total it up, but then they'd dash into the beer cooler.
They'd come back out, place the beer on the counter. I'd total it up.....but they'd dash a few aisles around the store and rummage.
Then they'd finally come back with chips and soda or whatever, and I'd finally be able to get them out of there, because in between their little hops and skips around the store, someone else ALWAYS came in. UGH it pissed me off so much. If that's not ALL, just tell me you'll be right back!
And another gem that made me want to pull my hair out.
Me- Ok, that's $9.87
SC- *hands me a $20*
Me- Out of 20?
SC- *blank stare or nod or both*
Me- And your change is-
SC- OH HOLD ON I HAVE THE 87 CENTS!You really need to see a neurologist. - Wagegoth

Quoth Devilot View PostUhm... what is wrong with these people? I've been on the customer end of "miscalculated and been a few cents short." I usually just politely say I'll run home and get some more money -- not asking them to wait for me or anything, mind you -- and they've usually been willing to cover the few cents.
There was one time I was a bit more short and ended up causing a hassle and eventually having to forgo the purchase, unfortunately. I tried to be polite about it, but it should never have happened. I wasn't paying attention to the prices, and they were higher than at the store I usually shop at -- probably because this one was closer to the college; I should have been more careful and made sure I wasn't buying more than I could afford, rather than just assuming I'd have enough to cover it.
