  • Read the Sign More Carefully and Don't Assume

Yesterday, I rang some items up for a customer and hot chicken was one of the items. She told me that the chicken was lower than a certain price and that there was a sign at the deli. I walked over to the deli, saw the sign, and a deli employee confirmed that the price was for a certain day which wasn't yesterday. I went back to the customer and relayed the message and she still decided to get the chicken.

After the payment went through, I prepared to give her the pots and pans stickers which were in the till. The customer wanted to know what I was doing and told me that she didn't ask for cash back so I gave her the receipt and she left with her purchase and without her stickers.

They're stickers that go towards professional pots and pans. They're worth a certain number of stickers depending on the cookware. The customer fills a card with stickers until it reaches the amount needed for that cookware. Then they bring the card and cookware up to the checkout or service desk and they get the cookware item free.

Not necessarily. If Purplecat works where I suspect she works, the pan stickers go away soon. I suspect the customer either doesn't pay attention to the specials, or doesn't shop there often.

I managed to save up enough to get one pan myself, which will tide me over until I can afford to buy the set I've got my eye on.

Oh, an old store where I used to live did that. Mom and I got some nice sets with those stickers!

Well I had a sinking feeling from reading your post but this just confirmed it. We work for the same company. I am not alone in dealing with the crazy.

Drat! I wish the places I shop still used stickers or cards or some such. All the places I go keep track of qualifying purchases in their computer systems and link it to your customer loyalty card. There's no way to share or combine purchases so people who don't want the stuff can give their points to those who do. Before the computer tracking I loved picking up the points/tags/stickers/stamps/whatever from the people ahead of me who didn't care. Got lots of free stuff and didn't have to worry about stopping in at the store enough before the offer ended.

Probably some corporate goon got wise to what was happening and figured out a way of cutting back on the amount of free stuff that has to be given away.

Though I will still offer to let the person ahead of me use my loyalty card instead of the store's generic if they forgot theirs. Makes it easier collect those points!

You have thieving employee douchewads to think for this behavior. When it was stickers or stamps, they'd be stolen, given away, "lost," etc. With computer-tracked history, there's much less room for cheating.

This is why I never got my own card for ShopRite. I use the extra keychain card from my mom's account, and whatever I buy goes towards her free whatever (since if I were to get a free turkey or somesuch, I would have to give it to my parents anyway because I have no place to put it).
